Sweet Tooth

Postby cailiff » Wed May 21, 2008 7:13 am

I find McDougalling enjoyable, but I still find I have a bit of a sweet tooth in the evenings. Old habits die hard I guess.
I was wondering if anyone has any tips on beating that sweet tooth or
satisfying it while still being McDougall compliant.
Thanks.

Could you have some frozen sweet cherries? I buy them for my smoothies, but I can't resist popping one in my mouth directly from the bag - they are so good!

I like frozen grapes. Last night I cut up a pineapple and that was delicious.

I guess it's fruit, right. You're probably wanting sugar sweets, right. You've got to train yourself to be satisfied with the fruit.
Cheers!

I find dates work well. You just have to control yourself to eating one or two.

Sometimes I will put an almond or two inside a pitted date. The crunch seems to make it more satisfying and dessert-like somehow. I think the flavor is better than any old dessert I used to have.

I'll have to try some frozen cherries & grapes.

Usually I don't have dessert, but I make some flavorful, caffeine-free tea, like mint or cardamon/cinnamon. This seems to satisfy most of my cravings for something to finish off a meal.

I Swear by my Sweet of Choice

Postby star » Fri Jul 25, 2008 1:36 pm

If you like ice cream, you will love this healthy no sugar added desert. Allow 2 to 3 bananas to get as ripe as possible. I let mine really brown on the outside so the banana is really sweet.

Break bananas into pieces and freeze in a zip loc bag.
Place frozen bananas in a blender and add a little water to soften. Then blend to the consistency you prefer. So deliciously better than any ice cream I ever had.

Variations:
Sometimes I add a tablespoon of raw cacao powder if I want chocolate flavor.

Sometimes I add a little FF Soymilk instead of water.

If you are sweet fanatic then you might be able to get away with a little raw agave added. I use to do that until I notice my sweeting cravings continues to diminish.

The banana "ice cream" is a big favorite here too! :D

Mmm . . . banana ice cream. I used to make that a lot. I really does make you think you're pigging out on ice cream.

Although, just for clarity, Splenda would not be McDougall compliant.

I also like frozen sweet corn right out of the bag. I keep a bag in the freezer at all times. It actually does help with sweet cravings and tastes great too. :-D

I only do the splenda popsicles when I'm in danger of a little bit of sugar triggering a binge  Lately I buy Dreyer's all natural strawberry popsicles, very good, fat free. Sometimes for a sweet tooth just a cup of herbal tea with agave nectar will satisfy. I'm not afraid of using sugar, and after I posted that about splenda popsicles I knew someone would call me on it  In reality I rarely eat it.

Sometimes I crave sweets at night, too -- here are some of my favorites:

** Smoothies, either in a glass or frozen and eaten with a spoon!

** Layering fruit (fresh or frozen) in a bowl with a few almond slivers and some raw oatmeal. Very sweet and filling.

** Baked oatmeal and fruit -- mashed banana, mandarin oranges (rinsed), blueberries, a few dates and a bit of vanilla extract. You can bake this with water, but I've also seen recipes with rice/soy milk or juice.

** A bowl of popcorn (the munchy factor) and some unsweetened juice (the sweet factor).

** Popcorn, a few nuts and some dried fruit is nice, too. Higher fat, so be careful. Not a lot of this one.

** Frozen pineapple, berries or cherries are all good to munch, too.

** The chocolate/tofu pudding recipe around the boards is good too. This is another one I don't do often, but it's nice.
