I am far from an expert but I did a ton of reading and research on this many years ago. My son (now 12) had so many issues when he was little. He was tested once but not able to finish the testing. Most doctors he has seen have thrown around the term asperger, although he was never diagnosed with that.
Looking at it now, we basically did a modified version of McDougall. We still ate meat and used oil but we removed all prepackaged foods, preservatives, dairy, eggs, soy, all nuts, gluten, etc. We eventually added gluten back in since he didn't seem to have an issue with that. We ate tons of rice, potatoes, fruits and veggies - with some meat thrown in. Of course, we have since removed the meat and oil.
Now you would never in a million years suspect that he had problems when he was younger. He was non-verbal for years and when he finally spoke, he stuttered. He woke up one day at the age of nine and had completely stopped stuttering and hasn't done it since. Almost all of his other quirks are gone. All the doctors he has seen feel he is one for the medical journals. They are fascinated by him.
I can't tell you that the food he ate was the magic cure. I can only say that when we attempted to give him milk, eggs, etc. his behavior became very erratic. He does test allergic to many different foods but this went beyond an allergic reaction.
My feeling is that it certainly can't hurt to give it a try.
