positive cologuard test

Postby Emily1 » Mon May 15, 2023 3:15 pm

Hi I was vegetarian for 35yrs and strictly plant based now for several years including of course lots of fruit/vegetable/whole grains and flaxseeds/chia seeds etc. I had a Cologuard test 5yrs ago which was negative. Just had another one and it is positive :( I am so frightened. I have a visit scheduled with a specialist but cannot be seen until August. My primary dr says I will have to have a colonoscopy and my concern is that I am 85yo and have read its not good for people over 80 to have one. Dr says they could do a low radiation CT scan but if it shows polyps they would not be able to remove them so could up having a colonoscopy. I know Cologuard can have false positives (and apparently false negatives) but am very scared its cancer.

I would repeat the Cologuard test before I worried. Might even be a case of cancer that someone dies ‘with’ rather that ‘of’ (?).

This is my concern with the Cologuard test and why I avoid it and take the FIT2 test, which is now considered a primary option. The Cologuard test has way too high a false positive rate and then if you do get a positive reading they will want to do a colonoscopy next. You can read about it here and see that the Cologuard, is not one of the primary recommended tests.

If you haven't I would recommend reading the full thread.

I am not a doctor, and can't make any individual or personal recommendations. However, if it I was in a similar situation, I might choose to acquire 2 FIT tests and do them a few days/weeks apart. If both came back negative, I might choose to hold off making any other decision for a while.
