You don’t mention your size, but my guess is that when people are used to seeing you much larger, they can sometimes say the wrong thing when trying to acknowledge the change. Instead of complementing you on your hard work, or great health, they see what they have been struggling with and imagine the only way a person can be a healthy weight is by unhealthy means.
Are you happy when you look in the mirror?
Also, I am so sorry for you losses.

BMI = 21.3 ... sounds like a healthy BMI to me.Lyndzie wrote:Are you happy when you look in the mirror?
A very important question! What do you think, Michele?
If you are happy with what you see, then you might want to take a look at Doug Lisle's lecture Getting Along without Going Along.
If you are not happy, I'd look at adding more grains and legumes. Specifically adding fat just so you can gain weight will help you gain weight (that is to say, fat)... but you still might not be happy with your looks.
Cheers,

Maybe resistance training can help you look more robust.

In the last few weeks I've been trying to put some weight back without success. This is despite stuffing myself with as much starchy food as possible. I'm beginning to think that unless I resort to allowing myself foods with oil I'm not going to be able to put weight back on using the diet. I don't like the way my face looks now with sunken cheeks.
It's beyond me how some people say they've gained weight with the diet.

It's really a matter of perspective. I'm happy for you, European Man and others who have no digestion issues. When that is the case and you follow the McDougall Program, you will have amazing health. I use to be that way so I know that feeling. Unfortunately, my digestion did get destroyed by other factors. Many other people are in the exact same boat. It's horrible to be afflicted with terrible physical and mental pain and for things to not work as they should, not because of the program but because of dysbiosis. I hope to get back there one day and will always strive for that.
