Leslie’s Journal

Postby ladevereaux » Wed Aug 05, 2020 6:08 pm

I have joined the August 2020 MWL forum and will be posting my meals here for accountability. I have been following Dr. McDougall for years, but I am finally ready to make myself a priority.

Some background on me: 2019 and 2020 have not been the best for me.
1. I started the 2019 divorced after 20+ years.
2. My youngest child (I have 4) graduated high school (empty nesting alone was not the plan I envisioned).
3. That summer I had to put my dog to sleep.
4. After getting my 4 kids off to college (yes all four are in college), my mother, who suffered from dementia for over 10 years, was diagnosed with cancer and died 5 weeks later.
5. The Monday after the funeral, I found out my company had been bought out and all employees would be terminated by the end of January. (We were actually able to work through March 2020.)
6. I work in the oil and gas industry, and with the coronavirus, the drop in oil prices, and other companies laying off, I have not been able to find a job.

The bright side in all of this is that even though I am an emotional eater and a sugarholic, my weight has been steady over the last year and a half. My birthday is this month and there are a lot of things I can’t control right now, but I am going to take control of my health. I am turning 49, my starting weight is 246 lbs, and I take HBP medicine. My ultimate goal weight is to weigh 160 and be off the meds, but my short term goal is to drop 10% of my body weight every 2-3 months.

Monday-08/03/2020

7am - Walk for 1 hour
B - Oatmeal with blueberries
made with unsweetened almond milk, maple syrup, and chia seeds
L - Caesar salad (prepackaged)
Vegetable soup (homemade)
S - Tortilla chips and guacamole
D - Caesar salad
Vegetable soup
15 bean soup over white rice
Jiffy Cornbread muffin (1)
Grapes

Observations:
I don’t typically eat breakfast and when I do it’s a cup of coffee or a smoothie, but I like oatmeal so that’s a plus. I bought the salad, chips and guacamole over the weekend and I don’t like wasting my money, so I ate it but won’t be buying it again. Tortilla chips and crackers are a weakness, so I know I will have to not buy them in order to not eat them (at least for now).

Tuesday-08/04/2020

7am - Walk for 1 hour
B - Coffee, 2 hazelnut creamers, 3 Splenda
Oatmeal with blueberries, almond milk. Chia seeds, maple syrup
L - Tortilla chips and guacamole
Vegetable soup
D - Vegetable soup
15 bean soup with white rice
Jiffy cornbread muffin (1)
S - Grapes

Liquid beverage - margarita

Observations:
I finished the guacamole (luckily my kids ate most of it).
I know the 3 Splenda packets are a no-no. (I like a little coffee in my sweet cream.) I have some Truvia but I really don’t like the way it tastes. This is going to be a work in process for me.
I have been drinking so much water, that I wake up in the middle of the night.

Wednesday-08/05/2020

7am - Walk for 1 hour
B - Coffee, 1 Splenda, 2 t sugar, 2 hazelnut creamer
Oatmeal w/ blueberries, chia seeds, maple syrup
L - Chipotle bowl w/ sofritas, white rice, black beans, grilled vegetables, salsa, lettuce
Tortilla chips
D - Vegetable soup
15 bean soup over rice

Observations:
Working to cut out the Splenda, then will work to cut down the sugar. I will never drink black coffee or unsweetened tea, but I will work to make it not so sweet.
Asked my daughter to buy the chipotle bowl. I did not order sour cream, cheese, or guacamole on my Chipotle bowl. :-D (Little victories). I didn’t think to tell her not to get the chips. She knows I would normally get them. That will have to be a victory for another day.
I don’t really have a problem going to the bathroom, but all the extra fiber from the veggies and beans has made it easier.

Thursday-08/06/2020

7am Bike for 50 min - 6.8 miles
B - Oatmeal w blueberries, chia seeds, maple syrup, unsweetened almond milk
L - 15 bean soup over rice
2 Jiffy cornbread muffins
D - Salad (romaine, cucumber, grape tomatoes), lite Caesar dressing
Steamed veggies
Baked potato

Observations:
I don’t normally bike, but I’m trying to add it as an alternative to walking.
I finished my vegetable soup yesterday so decided to eat a salad today. I am not a big salad eater, but I am going to try to eat more raw veggies. I used very little dressing since it had oil in it. I’ve tried hummus as a dressing before but didn’t like it.
Very interested to see what the scale says tomorrow.

My friend and I went to lunch to celebrate our birthdays this week. I scoured the menu for the best option. I ordered the soup and salad combo, only ate the soup AND left off the cheese and guacamole! This lunch was not on plan at all, but I made better choices so I’m ok with that.

B - Oatmeal with blueberries
L - Passionfruit smoothie
S - Ritz crackers
D - Potato and vegetable soup

10-Point Checklist:

2. Follow the 50/50 plate method for your meals. Choose fruit for dessert. NO

9. Follow these principles...Don't starve yourself and don't stuff yourself. YES
10. Avoid being sedentary and aim for at least 30 minutes or more of moderate exercise daily. YES

Observations:
I spent the day painting my mom’s house. This month last year we found out she had cancer and she passed on Oct 1. I try not to dwell on it too much, but today I realized that I had another “first” without her this week (my first birthday without her).

On the food front, I looked at the ingredients on the box of Ritz crackers (after I had eaten them of course) and they have flour, salt, and oil (not surprising), and Sugar AND High fructose corn syrup. What????? I was not expecting that.
