Percent of Calories from Fat

Postby JOJO1947 » Tue Mar 14, 2023 9:18 am

Hi Jeff,
Came across this advice in the May 2005 Newsletter. I am copying McDougall's exact words.
"FIGURING PERCENT OF CALORIES
A little simple math will help you determine how much fat, protein, and carbohydrate is in a labeled food or packaged product.
Percent fat is calculated by multiplying the number of grams of fat by 9 calories per gram, dividing the answer (the number of calories of fat) by the total calories, then multiplying by 100%. Your goal is less than 10 % fat per meal.

McDougall goes on with protein and carbs, but several of us were very surprised at the "less than 10% calories from Fat PER MEAL." Given that oatmeal is 14% fat, my breakfast of oatmeal with 1Tbsp ground flax and some berries and greens ends up at 18% fat. And yet my total for the day is 8-9% fat. Do you ever recall McDougall rescinding that "per meal" advice?

Thanks. JoAnn

this is why I say in my lectures that the program is </= 15% with saturated fat </= 5% fat.

The group in the MS Study that followed the the McDougall program were at ~15% and said to have excellent adherence.

You can easily consume a 100% Mcdougall Diet and be between 10-15% for the meal or the day.

From the MS Study

"Adherence to the study diet based on monthly Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) was excellent with the diet group showing significant difference in the total fat caloric intake compared to the control group [total fat intake/total calories averaged ~15% (Diet) versus ~40% (Control)]. "
