How long?

Postby Babygirl1126 » Thu Jan 11, 2018 8:35 am

Hi! I was told to come here to ask my question...how long does it take until blood glucose levels lower when eating a vegan diet? I’m new to this but I wanted to ask as I’ve read a lot of people this does not work for because their levels do not return to normal range. I have been doing Keto for a while and have had great success with it. But I want to eat even healthier by cutting meat and dairy. If it’s going to take months and months I don’t have that to risk bc of my kidneys when eating low carb Keto keeps my blood sugar in perfect range. Like anytime I eat brown rice, whole grains, quinoa or fruits my blood sugar spikes.

Thanks
Lauren

This question has been discussed here a quite a few times, responding to other people who are afraid to go off keto. Unfortunately, I keep forgetting the answer to this. (I've never had problems with high blood sugar or diabetes.) But hold on, and wait until someone who knows the details comes on and answers.

The thing is, this diet is healthier for you, better for your blood sugar, than keto, by a long shot. The idea that you want to eat "even healthier" than keto is an inaccurate one, because keto is the very opposite of healthy. At some points when you are on it, it can make your blood tests look good, so people think it's helping, but it is really making you (for instance,if you are insulin resistant) even sicker. The improvement on keto is a temporary mirage.

A very low-fat, high carb diet, using whole, minimally processed foods, is what will allow you to get your cells functioning properly so they will let the glucose in.

So if you refuse to go on this type of diet, you will never fix the problem. But you will think you have for a while

I just had to attempt an answer, because it is so frustrating to see people continually thinking this about keto. I am hoping someone else answers soon with details, or corrections to what I wrote above.

Hi Lauren, here are some links that will help you get a sense of how long it has taken for others:

https://nutritionfacts.org/video/how-no ... -diabetes/
http://brooklynreporter.com/story/brook ... -know-how/

It seems that drastic improvement would be seen well within a month. Keep in mind this is from following something very similar to the McDougall plan and not just any vegan diet. Like Willijan I would encourage you to switch from a keto diet to a McDougall diet. A keto diet allows one to "manage" blood sugar levels simply because it does not allow you to eat carbohydrates - but it does not actually fix the bodies inability to metabolize carbs properly as you are finding when you eat carbs. In contrast the McDougall diet restores the the bodies ability to metabolize carbohydrates properly which is the natural state of a healthy person.
