The study, led by Dr. Kaberi Dasgupta of the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre, reaffirms the usefulness of so-called fitness trackers — for diabetics, at least — after findings last year by American scientists cast doubt on the devices as an aid to losing weight.
Dasgupta and her colleagues didn’t seek to determine whether using pedometers could help shed weight, but rather whether the devices could lead to a higher step count and lower blood sugar and insulin-resistance levels in patients with Type 2 diabetes. What’s novel about their approach is that doctors in the study set goals for their patients for increased daily step counts as a prescription, one that was actually written down on a prescription pad.
