你是中國人?Looking for help in Chinese!

Postby UtahJane » Sun Nov 01, 2015 4:51 pm

I'm looking for Chinese people who can help me locate resources on a whole food, plant-based diet in Chinese so I can help a friend in Taiwan.

I have some resources already: The China Study; Barnard's book on diabetes; McDougall Color Picture Book and some PCRM handouts.

I'm especially looking for help on how to cook Chinese food WFPB written in Chinese. Let me know if you speak Chinese or know someone who does who can help!!

Thanks so much!

Thanks! I found The China Study and Dr. Neal Barnard's Program for Reversing Diabetes both in Chinese on Amazon. I had not seen Dr. Esselstyn's book. Of course, none of the recipes will be Chinese food. She can't really cook American food in Taiwan. I need to help her learn who to cook Chinese food the WFPB way.

My friend has diabetes, Parkinson's, cataracts, and retinopathy. She is just 63 years old and taking lots of medications.

Taiwan people prefer the non simplified way of writing chinese altho most can read simplified chinese. The only difference is the simplified chinese has fewer strokes so it is a short hand way of writing chinese.
Taiwan bookstores where the text is written in non simplified chinese (china study) :
http://www.books.com.tw/products/0010473052
http://www.chinesebookonline.com/produc ... 3622635521
This is the example of a china book store selling the china study in the simplified chinese script :
http://www.amazon.cn/%E6%95%91%E5%91%BD ... YRNNQD0WN8
Chinese can easily remove the oil from the recipes that they already know. Just have to learn how to fry with water.
Using the translated page, I learned that the China Study title in chinese is called : Life Saving Food.
https://translate.google.com/translate? ... rev=search
Taiwan edition of the Starch Solution (the cover looks like rice and sweet potato) :

Thanks so much for these additional resources.

I speak Chinese, so I am familiar with the language and the difference between the Chinese written in China vs. Taiwan. I appreciate you making note of this. Thanks so very much!

I looked at the google translation and the starch solution title in chinese seems to be :
Amazing starch weight loss method
I am not that good in reading chinese but the character fa probably does mean method altho it can also mean solution. I am rusty in chinese but the english word solution probably can be translated into the chinese words for answer (da an).

Thanks so very much for taking the time! You have been so kind!!

Another question I have is a good site to use to purchase the books and mail to Taiwan. I'm using an American credit card. Any suggestions on that would also be appreciated!

You can see if you can find the books on http://www.taobao.com, the Chinese version of ebay. While you cannot actually buy from taobao without having a Chinese (or perhaps Taiwanese??) credit card, you can buy something through an agent, who will process things for you for a small fee (generally around 10%). I have used http://www.taobaofocus.com in the past with good results - you pay for the goods, their fee, and a (small) charge for shipping within China. Then, they send you a picture of the goods, and if you like what you see, you pay the final shipping for the goods to be sent to you (or them).

Edit: And here is a search for The Starch Solution on taobao. I just copied the title of the book in Chinese from colonyofcells' link and threw it into taobao's search.

It's fairly easy here in Hong Kong as long as I'm getting things done at home. Even the vegetarian foods are horrible as shown in the pictures below, and you could tell it's just as bad in Taiwan:

http://www.meetup.com/Meat-Free-Hong-Kong/events/past/

Most likely it's cheaper to order books directly from online stores in Taiwan, they seem to accept credit cards and you'll pay some fees for currency conversion:

http://www.eslite.com/cs_faq.aspx
我們目前可以接受刷卡的信用卡有3種,分別為VISA,MASTER及JCB卡,您可以於誠品網路書店進行網路線上交易。

Dr. Barnard's books:

Dr. Campbell's The China Study and Whole:

Dr. Esselstyn's Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease:

Dr. McDougall's The Starch Solution:

Other books written in Traditional Chinese are also worth a read:

Their e-mail address is listed at the bottom of this page:

http://www.lapislazuli.org/tw/index.php?p=aboutUs.html

She used to work for M.D. Anderson Hospital & Tumor Institute and obviously making serious money over there. Then she realized it wasn't exactly a good idea to profit off sick people and took off afterwards:
雷久南博士祖籍湖南,出生於台灣台南,自幼隨父母移居美國,曾得麻省理工學院化學博士學位,後至德州大學癌症中心,專門研究癌症的預防與治療達十年之久,她常至歐美、東南亞各地作健康講座,最近回國內作巡迴演講,竭力提倡「身心靈整體健康」理念。

Dr. Lin wrote an introduction for the Chinese version of Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease:

He seemed to be a good guy instead of talking about the usual vegetarian / vegan junk:

Maybe you could contact them and find out if there were anyone in Taiwan who could help?

When I was still a newbie 5 years ago, I spent quite a bit of time to watch some talks by 周泳杉老師 and he did mention The China Study etc. so you could tell his ain't doing this just for the sake of Buddhism:

I really can't think of any Chinese foods that are actually good for our health. I was eating plenty of animal products while growing up in Hong Kong and didn't learn how to cook anything healthy at all, that's why I'm only eating super simple meals every single day.

Basically the success depends on excellent Japanese rice cookers because they're consistently delivering fantastic results. It does cost more to buy better ones on the market but I love sprouting brown rice (GABA) because of the taste and texture:

http://www.zojirushi.com.tw/products/product_detail.asp?series=1&category=1&prod=49
http://www.zojirushi.com.tw/products/product_detail.asp?series=1&category=1&prod=50

You could find the prices online but it's a good idea to buy it from physical stores:

http://www.zojirushi.com.tw/server/server1.asp
http://goods.ruten.com.tw/item/show?21505395047157

Just chopping up whatever organic veggies are available locally, then I would put them and the rice inside my Thermos before mixing everything with organic green tea. Plenty of choices in Taiwan and my favorite is Jasmine Pearls from China.

If your friend really doesn't know where to get spices in Taiwan, you could pay 4 bucks for International Airmail (Orders up to $80.00 and 4lbs.) and ship them directly to Taiwan:

http://www.iherb.com/Starwest-Botanicals-Organic-Curry-Powder-1-lb-453-6-g/22563
http://www.iherb.com/Frontier-Natural-Products-Certified-Organic-Curry-Powder-16-oz-453-g/30917

Awesome taste and smelling great with decent prices to boot. Miso (just avoid anything from Japan because of radiation) is another incredible choice for veggie soups because of the amazing taste, hopefully your friend could find that locally or else you could also get Eden Foods brand here:

http://www.iherb.com/Miso

Bring a pot of water to a boil, add some bok choy afterwards and then wait for a little while before turning off the heat. Finally let it sit there and save the miso for the very last step since we don't wanna kill the probiotics with high temperature.

I know that Dr. Esselstyn and others don't recommend smoothies at all. However, I just wanna mention that my transition at the beginning was much easier thanks to 6 months of green smoothies. I no longer craved any junk afterwards since my taste buds were working properly.

Please feel free to ask other questions and I'll do my best to answer them.

BBQ: This is incredible information and a great help! I will need to take some time to absorb and and figure out my questions. Thanks so very much for taking the time to compile this. You anticipated one of my concerns: I definitely do not want to direct her to people promoting a junk vegetarian lifestyle. I would love strictly healthy vegan (whole food, plant-based). Thanks for thinking of this. Be sure to let me know if any of these resources do not match Dr. McDougall's guidelines very well.

Bless you!!

Jane: You're very welcomed, all of my parents and grandparents were already gone as a result of diseases of affluence. Hopefully your friend could drastically improve the situation with radical lifestyle changes. I remember that Irv Robbins (father of John Robbins) was also in terrible shape when he's pretty old. His doctor really didn't know their relationship and told him to read Diet for a New America. Finally he got a copy of that book from his doctor and completely turned around. Otherwise he might never get a chance to see his great-grandchildren.

The motto is relatively simple:

Rich foods, poor health.
Peasant foods, GREAT health.

I learned this from John Robbins:

Live simply so others may simply live.
Eat simply so others may simply eat. (Feeding plants to starving children instead of animals in factory farms.)

Maybe ask your friend to recall what the ancestors were eating when they're really poor back then. Most likely they're still growing their own foods (just like mine in China) and replicate their humble meals whenever possible.

Cataracts and retinopathy might require extra carotenoid pigments from certain plant foods, thankfully it should be fairly easy to buy goji berries in Taiwan:

http://nutritionfacts.org/video/can-diabetic-retinopathy-be-reversed/
http://nutritionfacts.org/2015/01/01/foods-for-macular-degeneration/
http://nutritionfacts.org/2012/07/19/preserving-vision-through-diet/

It could be somewhat tricky for Parkinson's since we've gotta stimulate L-dopa production while making acetylcholine from dietary choline:

http://www.doctoryourself.com/parkinson.html

I really don't like to talk about supplements but it ain't easy to achieve very high doses of Vitamin C from food sources alone. It's still a better bet to gradually get off the medication while taking those supplements.

Once again I'm not trying to push supplements here. If I were having Parkinson's myself, it would be stupid for me to take pharmaceutical drugs instead of paying for much cheaper supplements. Even very high doses of Vitamin C and lecithin don't cost that much to begin with, it's still worth a try if Parkinson's weren't getting anywhere:

http://www.eslite.com/product.aspx?pgid=1001117692415297
http://www.eslite.com/product.aspx?pgid=1001117692432109

Right now these books are no longer available here:

http://www.eslite.com/product.aspx?pgid=1001252432120419
http://www.eslite.com/product.aspx?pgid=1001252432153181

You might have to get them somewhere else:

http://www.books.com.tw/products/0010536906
http://www.books.com.tw/products/0010549970

They're helping patients in Taiwan to get off medications while giving them supplements for their conditions:

http://youtu.be/s0cNWCTU_A4
http://youtu.be/J0PRHH3E-yY
https://www.youtube.com/user/cdilohas/videos

Andrew Saul never sold any supplements on his own, and he didn't recommend any brands at all whenever someone asked him that kinda questions. He's just selling his online course and his books to make a living.

He also completed his movie about vitamins without accepting funding from any sponsors as well. Just raising money on Indiegogo and it's coming soon:

http://thatvitaminmovie.com

You could see why he's making that movie here:

http://youtu.be/sX42zJ1dm74
http://youtu.be/ohHk8EOXqPM

Personally I've been taking it on a daily basis because of radiation from Fukushima:

http://www.doctoryourself.com/Radiation_VitC.pptx.pdf
http://orthomolecular.org/resources/omns/v08n06.shtml

Since Taiwan is so close to Japan, I'll feel bad about it if I were holding information back. Of course it's still up to your friend to decide whether it's necessary to take those supplements or otherwise.

It is probably possible to use a credit card in a taiwan web site and ship to taiwan.
Easy recipes for a chinese can be brown rice + taro, brown rice + sweet potato, brown rice + beans. Personally, I like to cook brown rice soups with beans and greens, mushrooms, etc. When I was a kid, I remember rice congee with sweet potato. Sweet potato does not need a recipe. Steamed greens and boiled vegetables don't really require a recipe (soy sauce is usually enough). Chinese vegan cook books will have lots of processed food and refined food like soymilk, tofu, yuba, wheat gluten, etc. which I don't like. For flavor, I seem to remember my father using fermented tofu altho these bottles often have oil. Fermented black beans tend to be too salty and bottles usually have oil too. Flavorings I have at home are bottles of fermented soy bean in soy sauce and red yeast rice sauce. I am not good in mandarin but I can speak the Fujian dialect which is also used by many old people in Taiwan. The fujian accent in taiwan is slightly different but I can understand them. Our local baptist church used to have a pastor from Taiwan.

I wanted to thank all of you again for the great wealth of resources and ideas and even cooking tips. Because my reading ability is limited, it is taking me some time to process these things, but I am making progress. I sure appreciate all of you for taking the time to think through this and offer your suggestions.

I know there are a lot of Chinese who need a lot of help, so I hope more and more resources will be made available.

I also hope to find someone who understands Dr. McDougall's views on diet and who speaks Mandarin or Taiwanese who would be wiling to talk with my friend. It would be perfect if that person lived in Taiwan.

Thanks again! I may ask for more help later. I appreciate the generosity of all of you!

Please go to 21daykickstart.org and try out the 3-week plan - it has included a lot of recipes! And 4 versions: American, Indian, Chinese, and Spanish! I believe the Japanese version is also either available or nearly available. Very similar to McDougall and definitely whole food plant based
