A doctor asked how I did it!

Postby megs » Wed Oct 19, 2011 8:36 am

Went to my dr. for a UTI last week and she remarked on my weight loss (hadn't seen her in awhile and I've lost 30 lbs. in the meantime); anyway, she asked how I did it. I told her very low fat vegan diet and an hour of walking every day. She's East Indian and is already a vegetarian but with a high fat diet. She congratulated me on my weight loss and said she's proud of me and that she'll try my lifestyle and see if it works for her! Needless to say, it all made my day!

Megs, that is so cool!
Every doctor I've had contact with recently (eye exam, follow-up x-ray) has asked "Are you diabetic?" and when I say no, they say "Great! Keep it that way!" I'm tempted to ask them how I should do that, just to see what they would recommend; but instead I tell them that I'm a low-fat vegan, have lost 60 pounds, and I get plenty of exercise. So nice to have something that I know will work, because I've already proved it to myself.
Congratulations to you on your progress!!

It was very nice of Doctor to learn something from the patient and have the courage to say I will try your method. My experience is most doctors are not learning from what they themselves witness and share it with their patients. Somewhere they know that this low tech method is so powerful, they will loose their grip, importance.

Indian doctors tend to be very supportive of this WOE. When I lost my baby years ago, a very nasty specialist told me that it was my fault because I was vegan - my Indian doctor stood up for me and said, if that is the case then how do you explain the booming population of predominantly vegetarian India? ;)

It is nice to have a doctor who doesn't think he is God. When diagnosed with diabetes, I decided to eat right and exercise and lose weight. I went to my doctor for something else and when he noticed my weight loss he insisted on putting me on metformin. I know a sign of diabetes is weight loss but I tried to tell him that my blood sugars were fine (he could see for himself) and that I was working hard to lose weight. It was like talking to a wall. No matter what I said he insisted the weight loss was from diabetes (his diabetic patients never lose weight by diet and exercise) and I should take the prescription. I took it but never used it. I started going to another partner in the practice.
