Gas and gastritis

Postby catttykins » Sat Oct 20, 2012 11:44 am

I started the Mcdougall diet 3 weeks ago (no meat dairy or animal products of any kind, eating starch veggies and fruit) and other than very painful smelly gas, I was doing pretty well. Then I tried to get off of Prilosec and now I think I have an ulcer. Any suggestions?http://www.drmcdougall.com/forums/posting.php?mode=post&f=1#

Speaking for myself...
It takes a while for your body to adapt to this woe. I have not mastered the ability to eat a bean burrito for lunch and forget about it for several hours. Eating more fruits and veggies was a tremendous amount of fiber for me and was an adjustment for sure. I'd say give your body more time to adjust before going off your medication. Once you feel better, and you will, you can slowly taper off of it (half a tablet, then half a half, then every other day, and so on) and see how your body reacts.
And of course if you are in severe pain, get thyself some medical attention. It could be something unrelated.
Good luck and feel better!

I was having some digestive difficulties - on-going for months - they were : belching, bloating, heartburn, sensitivity at the waist, intestinal gas, hiccups, difficulty in swallowing capsules, overall fatigue, full feeling at base of throat, pain or burning in upper chest, pressure in the chest, pain in the left side of chest.

So I read on-line about hiatal hernia and I tried the self-massage technique described here and felt immediately better.
I had to do it more than once over a period of time and I had a masseuse do it to me 3 times in 3 months.

I read Dr Mc Dougall's great book "Digestive Tune up". Very informative. I also gave up coffee, alcohol, onions & tomatoes.

I think it's not wise to just STOP Prilosec. Someone posted on people's pharmacy that his doctor gave him a 6 week plan for getting off Prilosec :

Week 1: Alternate 20mg of Prilosec (Omeprazole) with 100mg Prilosec
Week 2: 10mg Prilosec
Week 3: Alternate 10mg of Prilosec with 80mg Pepsid (Famotidine)
Week 4: 80mg Pepcid
Week 5: Alternate 80mg Pepsid with 40Mg Pepsid
Week 6: 40mg Pepcid

I was on Prilosec for 8 weeks and I gave up coffee, alcohol and citrus.
I also took a soy based probiotic.

I used this plan to get off Prilosec :

week 1 : alternate 10 mg Prilosec with 20 mg Pepcid
week 2 : alternate 20 mg Pepcid with 10 mg Pepcid
week 3 : same as week 3
week 4 : 10 mg Pepcid
