Yesterday I felt quite good, and I have started a proper running programme again. I have been off running for so long I need to build it up gradually. I did 4km yesterday, at high tide, so soft sand! It was like running in glue! Then in the evening I went to aikido. Another woman was talking about diet in the changing room. She had tried low-carb, and Jenny Craig. I suggested she google Dr Mcdougal as I had lost a lot of weight with this way of eating and left it at that. She has a lot to lose....

However, this morning my hands are quite bad. It is quite cold, a frost this morning, and we have no heating until one of us gets up, braves the cold and lights the log burner. It was me this morning, and I am wrapped up with fingerless gloves on to keep my hands warm until the fire gets warmed up. Its roaring away now, so things will warm up soon, and maybe my hands will feel better then.

I have been thinking about what I ate yesterday. I eat early before aikido, and I made some gluten free flatbreads and had a couple with stewed apple (plain, no sugar, cinnamon and vanilla). The flatbreads were 1 cup G-F mix, 1 cup tapioca and 1/2 cup almond flour. They were the only things different, earlier in the week I had lentil flatbreads, which are just red lentils, but I didn't have them yesterday as I had none soaked. Also I like the flour ones better!!!! So I am wondering if its that, or if its just doing aikido, which can be hard on the hands.

obviously one doesn't actually need flatbread...or any bread come to that, but I do like it.....

So I'm not too sure what the plan is now. Im doing basic starch solution, but gluten free. I did sneak a little avocado earlier this week, and gluten free flours are not wholegrain in the way non gluten free flours can be, but no 'cheats' other than that. Maybe give it another week, and then if there is no improvement try MWL (not to lose weight, but as a easier elimination diet) or maybe even an elimination diet itself. Which I dont want to do. :unibrow:

I'm a bit fed up. I did 8km in the hills yesterday, and about 1300 feet of ascent, some of which was quite steep (hands on the rocks steep). I walked all the up, and some of the flat and jogged some flat and all of the down. Except the scramble bits which I scrambled. And my foot has totally blown out again. I'm back to where I was in January. so I have no idea where to go from here.

Otherwise all is good, food is fine, basic starch solution is easy, and im not having refined sugar at the moment, although I am having dried fruit if I fancy something sweet.

Hands are slightly better, more free to move, its just the foot.....

Ugh, foot pain! Stops me from so much as walking around the block...but then again, I have a LOT of weight to lose. Hopefully you'll get to the bottom of it, because girl, it can really slow you down.

Its really cold, pre dawn freezing fog, and I am wrapped in a warm dressing gown in front of a roaring log fire. I need to get off this sofa where I am knitting an alpaca cardigan and reading the Mcdougal forum and put on my running clothes and go out onto the beach with the dog and do at least 3km run....

Im just not feeling it this morning.....

well I did it, I ran, :D I did 4km in the fog. Tired legs. Day off today, aikido tomorrow and run again on Friday

Unfortunately I ate olive oil last night (to consider someone else's feelings) and I'm feeling it in my fingers this morning. sigh.

Still its a choice I chose to make, not sure I will be doing that again in a hurry though!

Off topic, today is looking exciting....I'm thinking of buying a real camera......

life is moving on. 'Im up to 9.5km running, but it does still hurt my foot....also still walking the uphills, of which there are a lot.

on the food front I am beginning to think my g/f flatbreads are not suiting me. they are very simple, 1 cup tapioca starch, 1 cup gluten free flour mix, 1/2 cup ground almonds, teaspoon of baking powder and salt, add water to a runny mix, fry like pancake. But my hands are stiff the morning after I have had them. I am not totally sure so this week I won't make any then I will eat them next weekend and see what happens.

Its cold and gloomy in New Zealand....

big change on the running front. I'm both excited and fed up.

So....I went to see a new doctor, privately, yesterday. By privately, I mean not in the public health system. I have been seeing doctors, getting MRI's etc for free under New Zealand's free system, which is great, by the way. However I seemed to have ended up in a loop, where nothing could be done for the foot, and it was just a manage the pain and carry on type of thing. Eventually we decided to try a private doctor, recommended to me by my physio. $250/hour!! Expensive if you are used to free health services.....

Well, she was excellent, and gave me a comprehensive rehabilitation programme. It is very time consuming, and frankly if I worked outside the home I dont think I would be able to do it. At its peak it will be 4-5 hours a day, including a meditation/visualisation session. But mostly its exercises and walking. No crutches, no sticks, just the brace.

I plan on starting on Monday, because I am away for the weekend with my daughter. As only Auckland has covid again the rest of the country can still do things, we are only level 2. We are South Island. Our huge second outbreak is not quite as big as Mr Trump seems to think it is....

Food, I have been indulging in the vegan junk food pleasure trap a little too often. If I am going to do all this intensive rehabilitation then it would be foolish not to clean the food up as well. So as soon as I get home, a fresh new start for the foot. I have had hopes before but never a comprehensive plan like this, so I am cautiously optimistic.

well things have been moving on with the feet, and the eating.

Firstly, the feet.
I have been to see a specialist doctor, privately (so paying instead of using the public health system). She was expensive but brilliant and I now have an intensive foot rehabilitation programme. At its peak, it is 4 hours a day (not every day, but still...its intensive!) Hopefully by Christmas I should be back in action properly.

And food wise, I think I may be sensitive to tapioca flour, which is a bit of a pain as it is in absolutely every single purchased gluten free product. Obviously I can make my own g-f foods, but I could seriously do without this. It also explains school dinners in the 1960's UK...pudding was often tapioca with a dob of red jam in the middle. I hated it, but still had to eat it because the was the 1960's and kids had to eat what was in front of them (which I could never understand as it was pudding and therefore a treat so why did I have to eat it?)...but it always made me queasy afterwards, and I had to sit out during playtime until it passed off. But anyway, if it is the tapioca, that explains a lot and hopefully I can get on top of the eating again. At the moment I am simply not eating g-f breads or similar at all. I am on a bit of a potato kick at the moment anyway. I love my potatoes :D Maybe I can invent a sort of potato bread/scone thing that doesn't have tapioca flour in it.

failed totally with the potato bread. However, the dog loved it!

Foot rehab is going brilliantly, I'm really pleased. I can do things with my left foot I have not done for 15 years. Like hop!!!!

I tested the tapioca flour response because Dr McD has it as a safe starch on the elimination diet, so I was surprised to be reacting to it, and it did it again....and again....so we know where we are now. I do react to it. Nausea, and bowel stuff mainly. Also dizzy when doing rolls at aikido. I think I am going to live on potatoes and buckwheat porridge!

its been all about the garden recently. I have been planting more potatoes, and there are more to go in today. Yesterday we took in another area of the garden, and I am going to plant that up as well. I have carrots and mesclun and lettuces planted and I have the squash and tomatoes hardening off and they will go in the ground after Labour day. That is of course the key for a hail storm to arrive 2 days after they are planted! :unibrow:

Food wise. I am struggling with gluten free food. I am not enjoying it at all. I'm not sure what to do here, but I am certainly giving up purchased gluten free bread.

Covid, we are back at level 1, (except Auckland) no restrictions. I have no idea for how long, as with people constantly returning to New Zealand, we will get it here again at some point, its only a matter of time. But the basic plan is to keep it as stamped out as possible until a vaccine comes and saves us all. At least that is the plan for now. We have an election in a few weeks, and if Jacinda gets voted out, then all bets are off. Judith Collins, the opposition leader, is a piece of work, and I think will put the economy before souls. Jacinda will always put people and their safety first.

Weight loss time. I have been eating as I did when I was running every day. Obviously complaint but I was able to eat the higher fat things like nuts, and avocado, and dried fruit when I was getting the miles in. But I am not running now, and the weather is warming up, we are moving into summer and I do not fit my summer frocks! oops....

So Mary's mini it is, quick and simple, lets just get on with it. I'm an Irish lass so it a potato mini, and I have spuds planted all over the garden. There are salad crops ready for harvesting so potatoes and salads plus potato soups.

Breakfast:
hashbrowns, as is, no condiments.

Lunch. Potato and onion soup poured over beansprouts. I have no idea if the sprouts are compliant for a mini....are they a bean or a sprout??? However there is a jar of them on my workbench so I will eat them.

Supper.
Planning on baked potato with beansprouts, salad from the garden and some of the soup poured over the potato for moisture.

well this is funny! I lost 1.2kg in a day (about 2.5 pounds!!) It certainly isn't fat, I know exactly what it is as I was up to the loo 3 times in the night.  and obviously I feel a lot less bloated this morning :D

But the question is, what on earth was making me hang onto all that water. I eat salt, and have been having salt on the mini, so it can't be that. Anyway, I'm delighted to be rid of the bloat, and shall carry on.

I tried a short jog this morning 2.5km, but I walked the last bit as I brought home some seaweed for my compost. There was a fair bit washed up on the beach this morning, and I brought some kelp back as the root makes a handy handle, and I dragged it behind me down the street. The foot is OK, but still not really quite right. I have been offered another MRI, so I'm on the waiting list for that. Hopefully it will show what is going on.

I have some very minor calcifications in the ankle joint, and no bone breaks in the arch but once in a while, it just flares up in pretty bad pain. The dr's recommendations of less walking, and elevating it for 60 minutes every day really help, and of course once I eliminated all processed fats, the pain was reduced enormously.

Thanks, foot dr. :|

hi Buns.

Foot pain really sucks. I think we really underrate our feet and all they do for us. Particularly if we are, or have been heavy.

I really hope to get out on the hills again this summer. I have been offered an MRI, so hopefully I will find out soon what is the matter with mine.
