Lacto vegetarian defending milk saying anti dairy is wrong

Postby plants-and-carbs » Thu Jan 17, 2013 9:51 am

Anyone have thoughts on this video of a dairy consuming vegetarian saying that milk is very good as long as it's not processed and it is warm. He makes the case that cows are unique creatures like no other and were created for milk consumption.

Thoughts on this?

(p.s. You can stop the video at 5 minutes because after that he goes into an anti-beef thing)

Cattle were domesticated early in the neolithic age. Of course there were wild cattle before domestication. Early on, the domesticated cattle often mated with wild cattle.

His argument in favor of milk seems to be according to his religious beliefs and not from any science and is grossly inaccurate. His claim about what Jesus and Peter said are from somewhere other than Christian scriptures. Jesus and his disciples ate meat. That is in the scriptures.

I surely would like to see this guy go one on one with Dr. McD on the subject of cow's milk.

Literally the stupidest argument for every claim made in the video that I have ever seen.

Right from the start: "There are no wild cows, they'll die if not taken care of by humans, ask any farmer!" (I paraphrase.) Well, false. There are wild cattle. There are no wild dairy cows, but then... that's because dairy cows are a product of human selective breeding for a few centuries. There are plenty of wild cattle across the world. Including in India, where this guy's religious argument for drinking milk comes from.

And quoting a religious text with no scientific intent, support, or credibility doesn't really make an argument. It's like telling us we're crazy believing that the Earth goes around the Sun because the Bible doesn't say that.

This is true is so many ways! I have not watched this video but get the gist from comments that he is using religion as his rationale for consuming dairy. I think people try to use just about anything they can to justify their actions. But why do they feel the need to try and sway other people to their way of thinking? What does it matter to him that people are NOT eating cheese or drinking milk? Wouldn't that just mean more for him? :P

Perhaps he is worried that people will be educated and realize that we do not require dairy or meat in our diets and in fact it is causing harm to us. We would need less and less cattle until eventually there would be nothing but wild cattle allowed to graze freely on protected lands. He could no longer go to the store and buy milk or cheese and he is trying very hard to prevent that from happening!

All great points. I agree with it all. Yeah, he is using some kind of obscure gospel that has very shaky credibility so that does not carry much weight as well as the other points you mentioned.

Cow's milk is the perfect food ... for baby cows! Just like human milk is the perfect food for young humans! Once calves and children have weaned, they don't need milk from any species! :)

Listen to this great and FREE podcast by Dr. McDougall. This is really a must listen, McDougall quietly and soberly without raising his voice destroys the pro-dairy arguments by an industry researcher by citing the studies showing the harm of "liquid meat", and you must keep in mind that interview was 2 decades ago, and that the evidence from research today is greater against their side! You will notice that Greg Miller cannot respond adequately and always retreats saying that if milk was not healthy the American Dietary Association(ADA), the Federal Food and Drug Administration(FDA) and the American Medical Association(AMA) would not recommend dairy. However those are top down organizations which are too easy for industries with lots of influence, money and clout to bias and corrupt.

In this lively 1993 interview, Dr. McDougall talks with National Dairy Council spokesperson Greg Miller, who holds a Ph.D. in nutrition, and at the time of this interview was vice president of nutrition research and technical services. Despite research pointing to dairy’s role in inhibiting the absorption of certain minerals (such as calcium and iron) and contributing high amounts of cholesterol and fat (that can lead to obesity, heart disease and stroke), Miller staunchly defends dairy products as safe, wholesome and nutrient-rich foods that are an important part of a well-rounded diet. Miller explains that we should not look at just one food (such as dairy) when searching for connections to our modern day ailments, but should instead look at the overall balance and variety of our diet. Also discussed are the viruses (such as leukemia and AIDS) and infections (such as E. coli, salmonella, staph, and tuberculosis) carried by cattle, and how they may affect the health of people who regularly consume dairy products.

Note: This is a taped interview from “Your Good Health” (8/5/93), hosted by Dr. McDougall.

Duration: 35:16 -- Download Greg Miller, Ph.D. (taped interview)

I also rewatched Forks over Knives and noticed they had another dairy spokesperson who gave the same lame sales pitch mentioning that the ADA, AMA and FDA are all for dairy:

Thanks for this link to this. Was really interesting. It's funny how those "experts" just don't dig deep enough on things. This guys pro dairy arguments were so laughably weak.
