Digestion IBS

Postby Lola » Mon Jan 30, 2012 5:00 am

What is the best food for digestion to heal?

Those with digestive problems, what were you eating in the beginning? Is here on this board someone who completely recovered intestinal problems?

I ordered Digestive Tune Up and I really hope I will understand digestion better.

I had terrible IBS, acid reflux and gall bladder issues. I also was chronically constipated and laxative dependent. Eliminating dairy, gluten and keeping my diet very low in fat eliminated all of my stomach issues. Increasing my daily fiber to over 50 grams a day with plenty of raw and cooked veggies, oat bran and beans keeps my intestines moving along so no more constipation. My gall bladder is still there and will remind me forcibly if I cheat, but for the most part everything runs smooth as silk now adays.

I had horrible digestion issues for almost two years when I was eating SAD... I thought IBS, but it ended up being Crohn's and Celiac. It was a very crippling aspect of my life, always having to be near a bathroom, never being able to really be comfortable in any situation.

I am completely symptom free eating a plant strong diet and avoiding gluten, meat, eggs, dairy, oils and processed foods. My digestive system continues to function completely normal and it feels amazing.

I hope someday to be able to say my IBS is cured. And the effects of 3 diverticuli in the duodenum are gone.

Leaving out meat, dairy, oils, wheat, and oats is helping. And am using an elimination diet to search for other triggers.....it's being a long process.

It's frustrating to read about foods people recommend; often when I try them, for me they create problems.

Uff da!

I just wanted to add this, if somebody will found it helpful:

Drinking lots of water helps! If I don't drink it, everything give me problems. First thing in the morning, drink water as much as you care for. But not more than 1L per hour. You have to pee a lot, at least 8 times a day.

Water is something I rarely drink, especially since my diet contains only whole foods. What is it about drinking that you find helpful?

If I don't drink enough water I become sleepy, my digestion is bad and I get a headache. Also my skin is dry. Good for you if you don't need to drink so much. :)

Anyone find potatoes, rice or apples a problem for their IBS?

Was going to test potatoes, then saw this video and decided not to bother: http://nutritionfacts.org/videos/toxins ... -potatoes/

Am doing elimination tests now.....but the process is time-consuming enough that am not going to test foods unless I really want to eat them.

The symptoms I had were labeled as colitis by one doctor. They seem similar to IBS. The distinction is not clear to me. I also had acid reflux and a host of other inflammation (-itis) problems.

All such problems went away when I adopted a low sulphur diet. Here is what I eat:

Because I eat a lot of fruit, vegetables, a potatoes in stews, I seldom drink more than one glass of water (with lemon juice) per day. I go by thirst.

It's so confusing......I have IBS type symptoms. And also sinus issues/sneezing. And some arthritis/finger joint pain. These things continue even after eating a disciplined plant-only low-fat MWL type diet. Elimination Diet test have shown clearly that tomatoes and onions create massive sinus issues; am unclear about their contribution to IBS. Of course, I don't eat them. Looking over Burgess's food list, he can eat these without problems. It would be easier to find a coherant strategy for eating, rather than have to test every food myself!

Burgess.....wondering what your thoughts are on toxins in potatoes?

Suggestion: Do a search to find Jeff Novick's ideas on the subject.

I have never heard anything from a reliable source that would discourage me from eating lots of potatoes.

I have lots of food sensitivities, and I'm currently trying to be disciplined about sticking to an elimination diet too. I keep finding foods that I don't do well with, which has been great to get past the major issues (inflammation being the main one for me.) So far potatoes and tomatoes have been very inflammatory for me. I already don't eat gluten.

However, I'm going to change and now test some foods that I think will probably be safe for me, as I've been eating a very small group of foods, and I'd like to enlarge it a bit. Then the next time I find a trigger food, I can hopefully return to a much larger group of foods than I have been able to do for the past few months.

Lola, I don't have IBS, but rice seems to work really well for me, while potatoes and apples cause lots of bloating, and potatoes also create lots of inflammation as mentioned above.

Everybody is different. I too wish that I could come up with a unifying theme like Burgess has, but he's been working on this for years to figure out all that he has so far. And if I just assume that all nightshades are a problem just because tomatoes and potatoes are, I might miss out on some yummy red peppers when I don't need to, lol.

So for now I'm trying to test one food at a time. As Burgess wrote in his blog, it's a waste of time to test more than one food at a time. I know this from personal experience, because each time I add in a large group of foods, something always seems to start causing problems, and then I don't know what it is and I'm back to where I started.

I tried the elimination diet at first, but brown rice and sweet potatoes weren't OK, so I started eating other things. Gluten is not a problem, because I can eat oats, but wheat in big amounts and on her own cause problems. Millet, buckwheat and quinoa are also OK, but I must rinse quinoa and millet with water first of course. I'm almost sure potatoes are not OK. Maybe I should try red ones. But the problem is also because I stuff myself with food. :? I have to solve this problem first.
