I'm no expert but this is what my doctor told me:
You take hypothyroid medicine to replace the thyroid hormone that your thyroid gland is no longer making.
Once you take the medicine, your body is unlikely to increase its production of the thyroid hormones because it is using the thyroid hormones provided in the medicine.
I have heard stories of people reducing their medication and restoring some of the thyroid function through healthy diet, but I don't know of any studies supporting this. I have read that Dr. McDougall treats hypothyroid with synthetic thyroid medication.
Some hypothyroid conditions are the result of Hashimoto's thyroiditis, which is an autoimmune disease. The McDougall diet has been shown to improve some autoimmune diseases, so I suppose it could be helpful, but I don't think Dr. McDougall has made any claims about his diet affecting thyroid conditions.
