Tofu

Would Tofu be OK as a plant calcium source to deal with osteoporosis or is it too high fat since I had a heart attack in 2013? Thanks.

Hi susanjohnston,

Welcome to the forums and the McDougall Program. Most questions have already been answered by Dr. McDougall or Jeff Novick on this website. So be sure to use the search feature on the website and in the forums as well as Googling. For example, I searched Google for the phrase "Dr. McDougall Tofu" and found these pertinent results:

https://www.drmcdougall.com/health/educ ... ments/soy/
https://www.drmcdougall.com/misc/pdf/pdf050400nl.pdf

Plus in Dr. McDougall's Color Picture Book (https://www.drmcdougall.com/health/education/cpb/), which you can download in PDF format (https://www.drmcdougall.com/pdf/dr-mcdo ... nglish.pdf), Tofu and Other Natural Soy are listed as a Yellow Light food (Be careful - eat as a small condiment).

If you are overweight and still have heart disease issues, you should consider avoiding Tofu and other high fat foods completely.

Lastly, if you have not already checked out Jeff Novick's How To Begin sub-forum, please go here viewforum.php?f=14 and read threads Part 1 through Part 6. The information in these threads in invaluable along with Dr. McDougalls Newsletters, Books, YouTube Videos, etc.

Stick with this program and you will enjoy good health!

Cheers,
Scott

Thanks so much for your quick response. Trying to figure out why Tofu would be a yellow light food based on the following information: https://www.drmcdougall.com/misc/pdf/pdf050400nl.pdf
Products containing at least 6.25 grams of soy protein per serving are now allowed to carry a FDA-approved claim on their label; stating a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet containing at least 25 grams (about one ounce) of soy protein a day may reduce one’s risk of heart disease.

I think you'll find that calcium deficiency does not occur because the diet is low in calcium, but rather because the SAD food causes chronic systemic acidity...which the body has to neutralize by scavenging calcium, for instance from the bones, to neutralize the acidity. Eating calcium might treat the symptom but not the cause; however, the McDougall diet addresses the problem. 8)

For confirmation of what Calvin said above, see Dr. McDougall's short article and links to further articles here:

Why is Tofu a yellow light food if it reduces heart disease: https://www.drmcdougall.com/misc/pdf/pdf050400nl.pdf

Well... a 'yellow light' means caution.

It means that there are some good things about tofu and some not-so-good things. If you were to eat it in unlimited quantities, the not-so-good things would outweigh the good things and that would be bad. On the other hand, it is probably okay to eat in moderation.

To learn more about tofu, you might try some of the things that Scott recommended... like searching the site, and looking at threads by Jeff Novick.

I'll get you started... here is a thread by Jeff Novick:

Tofu/Soy Products
