Vegan Diet and Alzheimers

Postby wannabevegan88 » Sun Mar 18, 2018 7:39 pm

My father recently found out that he carries the gene that often turns into Alzheimers disease. His mother had it, so this has become very concerning to him. He has been a long time lover of the vegan diet, and followed the low fat, high carb plan for a long time. However now that he has this gene, he is very concerned. He went to a specialist who told him that the brain feeds on fat to stay healthy, and depriving it from fat will increase the risk of developing the disease. The solution they said was a plant based diet that was grain free, gluten free and included meat. (basically paleo diet)

This is very troubling for him and for myself, as we have always loved living a plant based lifestyle. He does have meat sometimes on special occasions, but the idea of making it a part of his daily diet is a scary thought.

So my question is has anyone tried doing a high fat, low carb vegan diet? I know this goes against the McDougall plan, but I would love to hear a doctor's perspective or anyone else who has had experience in this field. I know that a vegan diet has soo many benefits for health and is a great way to prevent all kinds of cancers and other diseases, but I am having trouble finding information on its role with Alzheimers in particular.

Any help or insight would be much appreciated!

Thanks so much.

Two articles by Dr. McDougall that explain the causes of Alzheimer's and how to prevent it.

"So you see you are no more helpless with AD then you are with CHD (coronary heart disease). Your options are mostly limited by what you know. Since money drives information, too few people know about these simple, scientifically-based steps I have outlined to avoid the suffering of AD and other common diseases."

And if you search using the Search button in the green bar above you will find other McDougall articles about Alzheimer's.

Here's a link to a talk by Dr. Pamela Popper that addresses this (the whole thing is good but she talks about genetics at 10 minutes):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBLCc2eL7Q0

Dr. Neal Barnard (he also talks about genetics the whole time):

And if you go to youtube and search McDougall and alzheimer's you get LOTS of results.
