Idgie's got a mission

Postby Idgie » Mon Apr 29, 2019 9:36 am

Hi, y'all,

Haven't been absent because I don't love you all. Just been distracted by life stuff -- mom needs heart surgery, work is difficult and intense, etc. But being away from here means I have zero motivation to take my own well-being seriously, so I need to be back with you, ASAP!

I'm sitting here eating a sweet potato, drinking a cup of tea, and planning how to stop waiting to have time to take care of myself, instead making the time because it's super-important. Partner made us veggie soup last night, and after weeks of eating junk, it just felt so good to sit and eat something nourishing and good for me that I almost cried. I've been so stressed out. I deserve better than to make my own health my last priority. So here I am again.

Food plan for today:
B: sweet potatoes
L: sweet potatoes
D: black bean enchiladas
S: veggie soup, radish cakes, mochi
Idgie, Southern CA

So glad to have you back, Idgie!

The demands of daily life can be SO challenging and I find it makes it easy to forget that taking care of our own well-being can put us in the best position to manage those challenges. Hopefully those of us on the forum can help provide support!

Thank you, Mark. Love your new user photo!

Had a good food day, and made a little headway on the other areas of my life that need work (side hustle, paying bills, planning food). This month we had some big expenses, so we're going to try to eat the food that's in the house rather than buying lots of new stuff. Fortunately, there's LOTS of McD-compliant stuff; not going to try to do MWL right now.

Plan for today:
B: sweet potatoes
L: sweet potatoes
D: black bean enchiladas
S: veggie soup, radish cakes, mochi

Actual:
B: Sweet potatoes; tea with sugar and almond milk
L: Sweet potatoes and sweet chili sauce
D: black bean enchiladas and a diet soda (caffeine-free)
S: veggie soup, radish cakes, mochi, and a small amount of hard candy

Thanks much, Nancy!

Today's the first Saturday in my new mission/quest, and it's a day to plan the upcoming week. I steamed a bunch of small potatoes and looked over the stuff I have in the house. We're kind of broke this month, so partner is gonna be in charge of buying us veggies to go with whatever starches I'm going to be cooking up from the pantry. I have pasta, beans, beans, pasta, pasta, beans, and a little rice. :-)

This evening, we're going to my friend's 50th birthday party at a local Mexican restaurant. She's having a buffet catered, so we won't be able to order our own food, but I'm choosing to plan my meal out right now: I will have beans, rice, salsa, whatever veggies they have on the buffet, and either water or some other unsweetened beverage.

My kid is coming over tomorrow, and maybe she will feel like cooking up some starches with me. She really loves sweet potatoes, so maybe I'll go buy a bunch of them this afternoon.

I had already decided that because the party is tonight, tomorrow is my first day of making myself be 100% compliant. The last time I managed that for any amount of time, it was because I tracked everything, so I'm going back to doing that. I was originally planning to do this in stages (eliminating animal products and oils first, then sugar, focusing on the stuff I cook first, etc.) but I'm just gonna jump in with both feet. I've gained 30 pounds back since my lowest, and while weight isn't my main motivator, it's a sign I'm not taking care of the food. It's all about the food, right?

I love to cook. I love to eat veggies. There is really no reason for me not to do this.

Day One

Planning is necessary if I'm gonna get this done.

Plan for today:

B: Soup
L: Curry and rice
D: Soup
S: Taro & radish cakes; pineapple; mango sorbet if I need something decadent

Actual:

B: :)

Day One (starting again)

Postby Idgie » Sun May 26, 2019 8:32 am

Accidentally posted this to the weigh-in thread, but it's fine. I'll post it here, too.

I missed weigh-in because I spent the last few days in the ICU with my mom. She's home now, and I'm down 0.4 pounds to 306.8, which I think is great, since it can be easy to just stress-eat constantly in that circumstance. (Also, it was good that the cafeteria for this heart center was about a quarter-mile walk each way, through underground tunnels, so I didn't spend all my time there.)

I don't mind that I didn't eat 100% compliant while I was there, but I made good choices even if they weren't perfect. A soyrizo and egg burrito is probably the worst thing I ate, but mostly I had cereal with soymilk for breakfast, and then tried to minimize the damaging foods otherwise. I didn't stress too much about it, though, because it wasn't my top priority.

While I was in the hospital, Amazon had an e-book special where you get a $5 credit if you buy $20 worth of e-books, so I got some of the healthy cookbooks I don't already have. I have a little plan to choose the MWL-friendly recipes from them and share them here and on my MWL recipe blog. We'll see. Reading the Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease cookbook is encouraging me to eat oats more often, preferably every day, so I'm gonna try going back to oatmeal for every breakfast.

I've also decided to take the plunge and stop allowing for "cheat meals"/"cheat days." I know from past experience that it's perfectly possible for me to eat 100% compliant, so that's what I'm going to do. I'm going to do it in stages first, though:

Starting now: McDougall, with small amounts of sugar/salt/plant milk (I do sugar/milk in my tea, and milk on cereal, but otherwise, it's not much of an issue for me since I don't have a sweet tooth)
Once I've done that for a month or two, or if weight-loss stalls: MWL
Once I've done that for a month or two, eliminate sugar and plant milk completely
And then I'll see how I feel about eliminating salt. :-) I have low blood pressure, so I'm not 100% convinced I need to cut out salt, but I'll keep reading and decide later.

Plan for today:
B: Oatmeal and an orange
L: Veg soup that partner made while I was gone
D: Gonna find a recipe to make from one of the new cookbooks
S: We have a bunch of fruit and veggies in the house right now. Plus I have some store-bought hummus; if it doesn't have oil in it, I'll have that, as well, or make some oil-free, tahini-free for myself.

Actual:
B: cup of tea with sugar and almond milk; Coach's oats with a teaspoon of date syrup; an orange
S: a completely mindless (but thankfully small) handful of trail mix (raw nuts and dried fruit) -- basically an almond and some craisins, but I didn't even realize I was doing it! Grr.
L: :-)
S: sugar snap peas. Tasted the store-bought hummus and it had cumin in it (yuck) so I didn't even check to see if it had oil; just chucked it
L2: Made a bowl of brown rice, navy beans, cooked veggies (mushrooms, onions, garlic, celery), and some raw diced red bell peppers, with some hot sauce and a little salt. Was gonna put corn in, but forgot.
S2: cold oats with plant milk, brown rice syrup, and prunes

Day 2

Postby Idgie » Mon May 27, 2019 8:02 am

Finally made it through a day 100% compliant. It's been a while.

Plan for today:
B: Oatmeal
L: Lunch out with mom and kid; will order the one thing I know I can eat on the Thai menu of our fave place: an order of papaya salad and a side of brown rice. Will skip the Thai iced tea.
D: We have a fridge full of veggies that need to be used up before Wednesday's farm box comes with new ones. Will make soup or pasta or something.
S: Carrot sticks, oranges, rice dumplings (store-bought), whatever other compliant fridge-cleaning foods I see. Probably the rest of the big batch of oatmeal I made yesterday.

Actual:
B: :-) (with a little plant milk and brown rice syrup)
S: sparkling water with a little diet grapefruit syrup
S2: jicama and tajin
S3 (I do a lot of snacking when I'm working at home, but as long as they're compliant snacks, I'm cool with it): curried red lentil soup
L: :)
D: black bean and corn soup, soda water
S: pickle

I'm fixing a pot of rice now. Here's tomorrow's plan:

B: oatmeal and fruit or vegetables
L: rice and jackfruit with bbq sauce
D: partner will probably make soup. If not, I'll make black bean and corn soup again
S: veggies, fruit, rice dumplings, oats

Numbers:
Weight (clothed): 307.4
Fasting BG: 95

Yes! And I read something this week (maybe in the Prevent & Reverse Heart Disease cookbook) recommending half a day at a time. Like, eat right for breakfast and lunch, and then tackle the second part of the day because you'll feel better and have more energy. Or something like that. I like it. Sometimes a whole day is more than I can keep track of, but I can definitely manage a meal or two at a time.

Day 3

Postby Idgie » Tue May 28, 2019 8:08 am

I had a little cooked oatmeal left over from my last batch, but not quite enough for a meal, so while I showered this morning, I put the leftovers in to heat, and I also put some rolled oats and plant milk in a bowl to soak. When I was done, I poured the cold oats over the hot ones, and it's actually really good. A nice contrast of temperature and texture.

Plan for today:
B: oatmeal and fruit or vegetables
L: rice and jackfruit with bbq sauce
D: partner will probably make soup. If not, I'll make black bean and corn soup again
S: veggies, fruit, rice dumplings, oats, rice with veggies

Actual:
B: oatmeal with almond milk and date syrup, tea likewise
L: :-)
S: rice with fat-free Asian sauce, small piece of hard candy
D: veg soup :-)
S: prunes

Plan for tomorrow
B: oatmeal
S/L: work event. I've asked for vegan food. I'll do the best I can and take some fruit just in case.
D: veg soup
