fake bacon bits condiments?

Postby forgood » Mon Jul 29, 2019 11:58 pm

I cut out tofu and tahini, but I still can't stop sprinkling maybe a1-2 tbs of fake bacon bits on my potatoes and other meals, is it okay to use as a condiment?

What are the ingredients?

One popular type, Bac'n Pieces, by McCormick list the following ingredients:

Textured soy flour, canola oil, salt, caramel color, natural and artificial flavor, yeast extract, FD&C Red No. 40, natural applewood smoke, disodium inosinate, and disodium guanylate. :(

It might pay off, in the long run, to think about what exactly drives you to add this to your potatoes? Perhaps it would be better to search for a more natural 'condiment'?

BAKED POTATO STUFFING IDEAS

Boiled or steamed veggies
broccoli
cauliflower
greens (kale, collards, chard)
zucchini
carrots
cabbage
Brussels sprouts
green beans
eggplant
asparagus
mushrooms
Peas

Raw veggies
grated carrots
thinly sliced cabbage
avocado
bell peppers
white or red onion
green onions
tomatoes
lettuce
sprouts
mushrooms
celery
corn

Fresh herbs
chives
cilantro
parsley
basil
oregano
dill

Pre-made sauces, soups, etc.
hummus
guacamole
ketchup
salsa
curry sauce
veggie chili
marinara sauce
crumbled veggie burgers
any leftover soup or stew
hot sauce of your choice
can of diced tomatoes
pesto sauce
roasted garlic
chutney
sauteed mushrooms and onions
broccoli sauce (see above)
any SOS-free salad dressing
prepared (wet) mustard

... just a few ideas.

I usually add a little spicy brown mustard, a little ketchup, and a lot of fresh salsa. 8)

Cheers, :-P

I guess I like the salt in them.

Hi forgood,

If you like to cook you might try one of the many smoky mushroom fake bacon recipes. I've made these before and they are good. It might be a good substitute and you can make it as salty as you like.

Here's a general guideline but you can do an online search and find recipes. Just leave out the oil.
Preheat oven to 375°F. Whisk together soy sauce, maple syrup, liquid smoke, garlic powder, paprika, and black pepper in a medium bowl. Toss sliced mushrooms in marinade or leave for a few hours, then place in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake until crispy, about 20 minutes.
