Potato Question

The recent email about Mary's Mini Diet has me wondering: What, exactly, is a "white potato"?

For example, is a Yukon Gold potato considered a white potato? How about a Red Potato: is that also considered a white potato? How about fingerlings?

I'm talking about the potato varieties found in typical supermarket with a good produce section. Except for the yams / sweet potatoes, are these all considered "white potato"? What about the Adrondack Blue variety?

Thanks in advance for answers, I really appreciate it.

Probably varying opinions, the world being what it is, but to me---"white potato"=andy Solanum tuberosum which then includes Yukon Gold, Yellow Finn, red ones, purple ones.... Separate category is "sweet potatoes" which= Ipomoea batatas. Many colors of those too including purple ones!

I agree with GeoffreyLevens.

White potato = Solanum tuberosum
Adrondack Blue, Yukon, Red, fingerlings, russet potatoes, baking potatoes and my favorite - the rooster potato etc.

Sweet potato = Ipomoea batatas
Yam (which is not a true yam but a sweet potato grown in a southern state and when grown in the north is called sweet potato), Japanese or Asian sweet potatoes, Garnet and Ruby etc.

Thanks, folks! The Latin names are very helpful in sorting this out.
