Acceptable Packaged Products

Postby JeffN » Wed Sep 19, 2018 9:01 am

Let me know your favorite packaged product (or two) in each category that meet my guidelines ( or comes very close). Please be specific with brand (Food for Life) and variety (Ezekiel 4:9, low sodium). If you can, include a direct link to the product. I am only looking for prepackaged products and not recipes.

• Bread

* Crackers

• Non-dairy milk

• Frozen hash browns & French fries

• Breakfast cereal (dry or hot)

• Jelly or Jam

• Packaged Soup

• Packaged vegetable broth

• Salad dressings.

• Beans & Refried Beans

• Condiments (mustard, ketchup, salsa, etc)

• Corn Tortilla

* Wheat Tortilla

• Pasta Sauce

• Whole grain pasta

• Instant potatoes and whole grain rice

• Cheese

* Snacks (pretzels, crackers, chips, popcorn, etc)

If you have a product you use that does not fall into any of the above categories, you can still include it.

Thank You. Your help is appreciated.

* Crackers: 365 Everyday Value Woven Wheats. They have salt, but not much, and the only other ingredient is whole wheat

• Frozen hash browns & French fries: Signature Kitchens (Albertsons house brand) country style shredded potatoes. They sometimes have dextrose and a preservative in them, and sometimes they don't.

• Breakfast cereal (dry or hot): Coach's oats, King Arthur Harvest Grains blend, Barbara's shredded wheat

• Packaged Soup: Andersen's split pea. Campbell's Oh Yes (only a few varieties are compliant -- I like the tomato and barley, and the Italian farro, I think it's called)

• Beans & Refried Beans: Bush's fat-free refried beans are the best ones I've had, because I hate cumin and they don't have cumin in them. :-)

• Condiments (mustard, ketchup, salsa, etc) I never met a condiment I didn't like. I may do a whole new response just for this one; my ex called my fridge The Condiment Graveyard

• Pasta Sauce: this will sound weird, but Costco's organic tomato sauce is our most common pasta sauce. It's tasty enough on its own to use as a pasta sauce.

• Instant potatoes and whole grain rice O Organics pre-cooked brown rice has nothing else in it

* Snacks (pretzels, crackers, chips, popcorn, etc) I like Orville Redenbacher popcorn the best (just the plain kernels, not the microwave stuff)

ALDI is my favorite place to shop, hands down, but unfortunately they don’t carry NSA beans.

• Bread - Ezekiel burger buns, Ezekiel cinnamon raisin English muffins

* Crackers - 365 Woven Wheats, Engine 2 crispbread

• Non-dairy milk - ALDI Friendly Farms Almond milk original unsweetened

• Frozen hash browns & French fries - ALDI frozen shredded hash browns

• Breakfast cereal (dry or hot) - ALDI Millville old fashioned oats, ALDI Millville crispy oats (Cheerios)

• Jelly or Jam - Smucker’s Natural Strawberry

• Packaged vegetable broth - Low Sodium Vegetable Juice (V8 or Knudsen)

• Beans & Refried Beans - cheapest I’ve found is Kroger’s NSA beans. They all seem to be of similar quality.

• Condiments (mustard, ketchup, salsa, etc) - Frontera Double Roasted Tomato salsa

• Corn Tortilla - El Milagro corn tortillas, Mission corn tortillas

• Whole grain pasta - Trader Joe’s whole wheat pasta (fusilli and penne)

• Instant whole grain rice - ALDI instant brown rice

• Cheese - Kite Hill Chive “cream cheese” (I'm not sure this fits in your guidelines because it is 86% fat, but it's also mostly almonds, so that makes sense.)

* Snacks (pretzels, crackers, chips, popcorn, etc) - Engine 2 black bean hummus, Trader Joe’s whole wheat pita

Edited to add links. If any of these are not "permitted," please let me know so I can quit eating it.

For those into steel cut oats, but short on time: Bob's Red Mill Quick version (other brands are available, and Trader Joe has them -very cheap). You can use a microwave!

https://www.bobsredmill.com/recipes/how ... -cut-oats/

I like most of the Ezekiel products I have tried. Some are already listed above but my favorite tortillas are Ezekiel Sprouted Corn, for their gutsy super-corny taste. They are also more filling than most tortillas, IMO. They are more expensive, but I eat less per meal :).

I have never found one. However, I am wondering if perhaps someone, somewhere in some corner of the universe, may have found one. :)

That's part of why I am doing this. I want to see what others have found or know of, as we come from all over the USA and the World.

Thanks

Jeff, I'm not sure what your specific guidelines are, but I think these Simply Potatoes (both the shredded hash browns and the plain diced) should be okay. These are not frozen. http://www.simplypotatoes.com/products/index.html

Yes, those 2 look good by the Nutrition facts label, but I would love to see the ingredients to confirm.

Here's the ingredients for the shredded hash browns, which I happen to have on hand. (I don't have the diced ones on hand):
Potatoes, Dextrose, Disodium Pyrophosphate (added to maintain color), Potassium Sorbate and Sodium Bisulfite (added to maintain freshness).

I think without the preservatives the potatoes would be pink slime in no time. The expiration date on this package I have is Nov 4, and that's still over one month away.

Hi,

Love this thread!! Going to not duplicate products already highlighted above - and only cover categories / products that either I or my family (or both) uses and loves.

Have to say that I didn't expect this to be a learning opportunity -- but, found that certain stores that I purchase heavily from (that's you, Trader Joe's) - don't have on-line nutrition information - which leads me to believe that you have to check the nutritional information every single time (I'll list a few of these that are compliant, but can't post links directly from them). Also, found that my "NSA / no-oil" veggie broth really isn't! And, that my favorite "low sodium soup" is still a sodium bomb (that's you, Amy's Split Pea...) :crybaby:

Also, tried my best to understand "compliance" or close to compliance and have indicated potential issues below - apologies in advance if any misinterpretations.

Frozen Hash Browns:

Ore Ida Potatoes O'Brien - http://www.oreida.com/Products/P/Potato ... 6Ly8vZFzZs - has some preservatives, I don't use often...

Trader Joe's Shredded Hash Browns - https://www.fooducate.com/app#!page=pro ... 31380C180E - link is to Fooducate - ingredients are potatoes & dextrose, agrees with my packages in freezer

Breakfast cereal - cold:
Arrowhead Mills Puffed Kamut (OMG, I love this - but it's calorie dense...) - http://www.arrowheadmills.com/cpt_produ ... ut-cereal/

Arrowhead Mills Puffed Rice - see above - http://www.arrowheadmills.com/cpt_produ ... ce-cereal/

Breakfast cereal - hot:
Bob's Red Mill 5 grain cereal (contains flaxseed) - https://www.bobsredmill.com/5-grain-rolled-cereal.html

Packaged soup:
Dr McD Black Bean & Rice (you don't have to use the whole seasoning packet - which could make it closer to compliant on sodium) - I keep these in my desk at work - https://www.vitacost.com/dr-mcdougalls- ... n-and-rice

Dehydrated soup mixes from Harmony House foods (you probably want to season these and note that all mixes are NOT compliant - many with TVP, etc.)
Lentil Quinoa - https://www.harmonyhousefoods.com/Lenti ... html#tab-2
Split Pea - https://www.harmonyhousefoods.com/Split ... html#tab-2
Vegetable Soup - https://www.harmonyhousefoods.com/Dried ... html#tab-2

Condiments:
Trader Joe's Fire Roasted Tomato Salsa (NSA) - https://www.fooducate.com/app#!page=pro ... 31380C180E (link is from fooducate again, but agrees to the jars that I have on hand)

Whole Grain Pasta:
Well, cheating here with a whole grain Ramen noodle...
Lotus Foods - Organic Brown Rice Ramen Noodles (buy at Costco if you have membership there) - https://www.iherb.com/pr/Lotus-Foods-Or ... 83-g/65364

Whole Grain Rice (+ other grains):
Trader Joe's Frozen Organic Brown Rice (just brown rice... be careful because non-organic has oil)
Trader Joe's Frozen Quinoa (just quinoa)
Minsley Steamed brown rice bowl (buy it at Costco if you have membership there) - http://www.minsley.com/products-bowls-brown.php

Appreciated other responses and looking forward to those to come...

Cheers,
Stephanie

Edited - I have deleted Amazon links and added links to other sources...

• Bread - Husband eats these, not me
Dave's Killer Bread Good Seed
http://www.daveskillerbread.com/good-seed

Food for Life 4:9 Sprouted Whole Grain English Muffins

Used to buy a long time ago but no longer do:
Alvarado Street Sprouted No-Salt Added
https://www.alvaradostreetbakery.com/br ... in%20Bread

I know this bread has been on the Approved Foods list for ages, but it contains Sunflower Lecithin, so I once wrote the office and asked about it a few years ago and was told it's acceptable:
Alvarado Street bakery products have always had some lecithin in them, and yes it is way down on the list so we do allow it to be on our list of approved products.

Mary McDougall

I also know Mary is more lenient than Dr. McDougall. Although it remains on the Approved Foods list, I no longer purchase it for the family.

Old El Paso Fat Free Refried Beans
https://www.oldelpaso.com/products/fat- ... ried-beans

A discrepancy in ingredients between what the web site says and what the can in my hand says. The can says:
Ingredients: Cooked beans, water. Contains less than 2% of: salt, tomato paste, sea salt, chili pepper, sugar, onion powder, natural flavor, garlic powder.

I'll have to keep an eye on future purchases of this brand - they may be changing the recipe soon to include oil like all their other styles of refried beans.
