Help me find awesome meal prep containers that dont break.

Postby Branson » Tue Aug 28, 2018 9:41 am

So Jeffs affordable meals are pretty much a one bowl or plate deal.

I want to make 3 seperate items that can be frozen like cook once a week, eat 3 meals a day all week.

I found this lady and what she is doing is exactly what I need! Eat on 1.50 a day.

https://rawvana.com/vegan-meal-prep-1-50-day/

But I look at glass compartment storeage, freezer to microwave and I think these new lock lids are STUPID with the latches, those are just waiting to break. Smart for the companies, dumb for me.

Plastic? Well, cant nuke them, so now 2 things to wash. Again, lids are gonna crack cuz they are cheap plastic.

So brainstorm were you me what to buy.

Expense doesnt matter if the lids and containers last decades. That is frugal.

PS anyone doing this?

Or should forget the whole thing and just make Jeff meals and put it in mason jars leaving enough space so it wont crack?

Help! Im moving in 3 weeks, I will have no food in cupboard or fridge and I have the chance to be pure Mcdougall cuz I always have meals premade in the freezer and fridge!

Thanks
Branson

I like Glasslock. They can go in the freezer, microwave, dishwasher and oven (not the lids in the oven). I've bought them from Bed, Bath and Beyond and also from Amazon.

For glass storage containers I'd lean toward Anchor Hocking or Pyrex. You can find them at Walmart, Target, and other stores, or online. You can see some storage container options here: https://www.thespruceeats.com/best-glas ... rs-4154183
You don't have to wait to be happy.

I use the same ones Agnes recommends. Not sure how they would hold up in the freezer, I could try for you if you like. I just use them in the fridge. The 4 cup size is what I would take my lunch to work in.

America’s Test Kitchen did some testing on containers: https://www.americastestkitchen.com/art ... head-meals

Square containers would work best to maximize space.

We use Pyrex, Anchor Hocking and Ball Mason Jars to freeze food in.

I own and use the Anchor Hocking and Pyrex too. My favorite are the square shaped ones.

I own a lot of OXO kitchen tools and find them well designed and ergonomic to use -consider the OXO containers in the link to America’s Test Kitchen too. They weren't on the market when I bought mine.

I use mason jars and glass containers with the locking lids. I actually kind of hate the locking lids because when they break, you have a great baking dish without any lid, and really, how many small rectangular baking dishes do I need? But the lids until they break are GREAT and they are completely liquid-tight. Mason jars are, too, though, and they're cheap, plentiful, and even available extra-cheap at second-hand stores. When freezing, I use the straight-sided ones.

When I buy tomato sauce in glass jars, I wash the jars out and reuse them for all of my meal prep needs. They're especially great for soups, overnight oats, and homemade refried beans.

I am curious about the Jeff Meals. Is there a link?
I use pyrex and buy them when they go on sale at walmart but I have eyed these containers.

We actually just store seperate ingredients and sauce in the freezer and assemble them in the morning in lunch boxes. I have seen a lot of different glass containers with the lock lids. I don't reheat the whole meal and sides so I pack separate containers.

He calls then SNAP meals - Simple Nutritional and Affordable Program. They're based on the formula here:
viewtopic.php?f=22&t=7168&hilit=quick+recipes+dish+1
and more details here:
viewtopic.php?t=10519&highlight=snap

or just use the word "SNAP" in the Advanced Search on this message board to find not only all of Jeff's writings about them but recipes developed by other users based on his formula.

He does sell some DVDs with the recipes, too, his Fast Food series, available here at Dr. McDougall's store:
https://www.drmcdougall.com/health/shopping/dvds/
or through VegSource:
https://store.vegsource.com/collections ... ood-series

I think they're also on Amazon, as are most of Jeff's other DVDs.

Photos accompany the recipes in this Facebook album of his, too (You don't need to belong to FB to see them).

Wow thanks. :-D There is so much information on this site I have a difficult time knowing what to look for. Off to look at those links and search.

I think I watched some youtube Videos of Jeff at a Mcdougal event. He is so funny and entertaining and motivating!
