cookie recipe question

Postby Shari_in_SD » Wed Apr 18, 2018 8:11 am

Does this recipe fit within the McDougall guidelines?

2 very ripe bananas, 1/3 cup peanut butter, 1 1/2 cup oatmeal and 1/4 to 1/2 cup chocolate chips. mix all together and bake at 350 for 15 minutes.

The two questionable items are the peanut butter and chocolate chips. Peanut butter is allowed in moderation and if this makes 16 cookies that doesn't seem like a lot of peanut butter. The chocolate chips would have some dairy in them so if I am striving for completely animal free that might be a problem. Maybe raisins would work but that would affect the moisture in the cookie. What about carob chips? I have never used those before.

If you are trying these you do not want to store them in an air tight container because they get wet for some reason.

Shari

You can get dairy free chocolate chips though they are still a very high fat and probably high sugar, "indulgence" food. Personally, I like moist, soft oat meal cookies and so when I make them I add raisins I have pre-soaked in hot water so they are extra plump and juicy. Depending on how badly you want them to come out to match a pre-existing idea of how they should taste and feel, you can mix and match ingredients all sorts of ways. I love peanut butter but don't need the calories all that much and have made oatmeal cookies with just the oats, banana, and raisins. To me they were great! For SAD friends to apply subtle "influence", then yes, the peanut butter might help :lol: Another variation I like is cut back on the bananas (less wet) and add herb tea for flavor variations. My top favorite for that is Celestial Seasonings Bengal Spice which I make double strength and use for the liquid part.

I make banana oat cookies using just mashed bananas and rolled or quick oats - that's it.
If you want a chocolaty flavour add some cocoa powder.

You can find the recipe for banana oat cookies if you click on the link below which is part of my food tip series;

Guittard makes delicous chocolate chips and is available in many grocery stores. The semi-sweet is non-diary. One word of caution: chocolate chips contain cocoa butter, which is the solid fat from cocoa beans, and does technically not fit the “no oil” parameters of this WOE. That being said, this is also a judgement free zone, so do your best and ignore the rest.

I use these chips in muffins now and then.

I think you have to consider your own individual health situation or the health situation of whoever will be eating the cookie to determine what's within McDougall's guidelines. Big picture. I know Heather McDougall has an oatmeal chocolate chip cookie recipe in the archives that uses semi-sweet chocolate chips. Kid-friendly recipe that calls for 1 1/2 cups of chocolate chips. It's the last recipe here https://www.drmcdougall.com/misc/2013nl/mar/recipes.htm

I don't think carob chips would be healthier than the chips I listed because they would probably contain added oil (oil, sugar, carob powder). Can't really say I like the taste of carob either. Cacao nibs might be another option. Basically pieces of cocoa bean. http://www.onegreenplanet.org/vegan-foo ... d-to-know/

Here's Dillon's Oat Clusters recipe which is similar to yours, but no nut butter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouDZvl7P7g0

That is a great tip, Agnes! I just pulled out my bag if Guittard semi-sweet chips for comparison. Ingredients: sugar, cocoa beans, cocoa butter, sunflower lecithin and vanilla. I will check out the extra dark chips next time I’m at the store. Sounds like a better choice, and yummy!
