ParaGard- Should I be concerned about copper?

Postby Conniemark3 » Tue Nov 14, 2017 11:10 am

I have heard that we want to avoid copper due to an Alzheimer's risk. I use the ParaGard for birth control. Should I be concerned and switch methods of birth control? I wonder about the use of hormones in the other forms of birth control. Which form of birth control is McDougall approved? Thanks!

Since you haven't gotten any replies here, you may want to repost this in "The Lounge," where more people are likely to see it. However, you may not get any replies there either, as this is pretty off topic for this website. I've never heard anything about Alzheimer's and copper.
Try searching the site for copper, and birth control, and see if anything comes up. Use the Search button in the GREEN stripe at the top of the page, as I think the other button will only give results on the Discussion Board. What you want are search results that are writings by Dr. McDougall or posted by him, not results from anyone who happens by here.

I chose Paragard, too. It seems like the best choice - as effective as a vasectomy, nothing to remember, and no hormones. I think the absorption of copper is pretty small, and remember, you’re not going to use it for the rest of your life. And it has to be a way better choice than Mirena.

I’m pregnant at the moment, but will get Paragard again after I give birth. Since they last 10-12 years, mine should get me until menopause, then no more!

I’d be more concerned about the copper if I was actually ingesting it. Aluminum is not good, and neither is cholesterol. Did you read Dr. Barnard’s book Power Foods for the Brain? Copper is an essential mineral, just you don’t want too much. Assuming you are eating a healthy diet, I don’t think the short term use of a copper IUD will tip the scales for dementia.

Might the OP be confusing aluminum with copper ?

In Dr. Barnard’s book, he mentions copper as being an issue, along with aluminum.

Oh... then why do most multivitamins/minerals contain copper? Hmmm.

The issue that Dr. Barnard brings up is that out daily requirement for copper is very small, and we are getting way too much between food, multivitamins and fortification.
