Fiber ? and endurance foods

Postby victw » Thu Feb 18, 2021 3:58 pm

Jeff,

This probably covered somewhere but a search hasn't led me to the spot.

I have started backpacking the past few years. I am doing longer trips without resupply options. This summer I will be carrying 10 days of food. Which will be about 15 lbs. And it all has to fit in a bear can. Which adds volume as a complication.

I'm working off the high end of the calorie density chart while trying to keep it healthy.
I'm targeting about 2500 calories a day - in order to keep the weight down I will be upping my fat percentages. Lots of nuts.

I'm concerned about fiber intake. Normally it's not something we worry about WFPB. But when it's a target is there a recommended minimum or is dependent on the calorie intake?

Can you make any recommendations for nutritional info for endurance athletes? Some backpackers do stay away from processed foods but they just add oil to foods. I can eat more nuts - but I can't wrap my head around carrying a jar of olive oil.

Thanks.
Vicki Wilson

P.S. For anyone else reading - freeze dried veggies are your friend. 2 oz can be equivalent to a solid day of veggies. The problem is volume.

3 years staying on plan is the goal.
