JOI Plant "Bases?"

Postby JeffN » Thu Feb 04, 2021 10:50 am

I just posted this in answer to a question on the McDougall Program FB Group on using JOI Plant Bases to make homemade almond milk.

Here is a link to the product in question...

While this has always been a simple and quick option, just blend a tbsp of almond butter with a cup or so of water, and then BAM, you are done. However, there is a reason we don't usually recommend it. Simple and quick is not always best.

This JOI product is just nut butter with a heck of a markup. You can check the numbers and see this is true on both counts. They sell a pound of their regular almond base (butter) for $20. You can easily find it for half that. For example...

So, if you were to go this route, there is a much cheaper option.

However, the main problem is not just the price but the end product is very high in calories and fat. Each tbsp is ~95 calories and 76% fat, which is more than most of the commercial ones. And they (JOI) recommend 1-2 tbsp per cup.

You do the math :)

Considering all the above, I don't see much joy in the JOI product. :)

UPDATE - They have added a plain Oat milk base that is 85 calories for a serving which is 2 tbsp which is better then the nut bases but again, you are paying quite a bit for oats.
