Defending Thermodynamics in a Diet Debate (questions)

Postby healthyvegan » Sun May 19, 2019 10:26 pm

Jeff, I really appreciate Kevin Hall's work & he isn't the first to use isotopes, metabolic wards, etc to measure metabolism, but his findings here seem to raise conflict with previous work. https://physics.aps.org/articles/v12/47

I don't believe there is a violation of thermodynamics, just that carbohydrates increase respiration. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC463811/

"The authors calculated that between 3 and 8 g fat/d was produced through de novo lipogenesis compared with 360–390 g carbohydrate ingested/d and 60–75 g body fat stored/d. Thus, the addition of excess carbohydrate energy to a mixed diet so that total energy intake exceeded total energy expenditure (TEE) increased body fat stores, but not by conversion of the carbohydrate to fat.
Instead, the oxidation of dietary fat was suppressed and fat storage thereby increased.

I am just trying to follow the molecules and while I agree the clinical significance is probably weak and on par with CICO, I am very much stuck on "No common energy currency: de novo lipogenesis as the road less traveled" & Dr McDougall has definitely echo'd some of the studies listed in this paper. https://www.drmcdougall.com/misc/2009nl ... ionate.htm (McDevitt)

Hall seems to say we can get obese on excess broccoli calories in the equivalent of excess chocolate calories. I buy that excess calories suppress fat oxidation because of oxidative priority https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5326984/

I don't want to be stooped in bogus macro dogma & I try not to be despite my foot being firmly stuck in the de novo lipogenesis muck!

I am not sure I understand your question but it reminds me of this previous discussion we had and think you are asking a similar questions...

As I mentioned before, and because I’m not clear on your question, if you have specific concerns about Kevin Halls work (and if you think he is contradicting his previous work), I would recommend communicating directly with him. He is very active and engaging and post/replies regularly on social media. His professional contact info is also on his papers and at the NIH.
