Kidney Disease Diet

Postby mike at the river » Sat Jun 02, 2018 7:07 pm

Jeff, what is the best whole food, plant based diet for someone in stage 5, chronic kidney disease? The "mainstream" dietitian are all fans of lean meat, limiting whole grains and fruits, increasing protein, etc. Very reductionist thinking about potassium, etc. The blog www.kidneybuzz.com pushes this a lot, and parrots the American Kidney foundation diet. Even the Kidney foundation "vegetarian" diet recommendations aren't really. No understanding of wholism, health, etc. Dr McDougall does warn against to much protein, even plant protein. Found one confusing article https://bit.ly/2rCDZf8. Thank you.

This is a really a situation where I recommend working with someone who can get involved in your individual case as the diet must be adjusted to your situation.

Here are two good resources

Jeff, thank you for the reply. The PCRM article was the best I've ever seen. I have had a Nephrologist for several years. She has always been open to plant based diet, as you know several scholarly articles have shown the benefit to kidneys of avoiding animal protein. Did attend a class by a DaVita dietitian, but it was all about meat. Are you available for a paid consultation? I could really use contact with someone who understands the method, and benefits of a plant based diet. Thanks again, Mike.... [email protected].
