PB2 - OK or Not?

Postby CoachBJ » Mon Nov 05, 2012 10:11 am

Jeff,
Ran across this in the grocery store, can you comment please? I rarely use peanut butter anymore because of the high fat, but every once is awhile I'd like to use in baking.

PB 2
http://www.bellplantation.com/products/pb2-powdered-peanut-butter.html

PB2
INGREDIENTS:
Roasted peanuts, sugar, salt.

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving size: 2 Tablespoons (12 grams)
Servings per container: 15
Calories: 45
Calories from fat: 13
Total fat 1.5g
Saturated fat 0g
Sodium 94 mg
Total carbohydrate 5g
Dietary fiber 2g
Sugars 1g
Protein 5g

I'm looking at label differences this is what I see:

Peanut Butter -
1T
94 cal
73 fat (78% fat)
73 sodium
1.5 sugar

PB2
1 1/2T
45 cal
13 fat ( 29% fat)
94 sodium
1 sugar so 29%fat

So from reading labels as a consumer it looks good, how is a consumer to make an informed decision?

It is nothing but peanut butter with added sugar and salt, which makes it worse than peanut butter.

I don't want you to read the label as a consumer. :)

I want you to read the label as an informed, educated consumer who knows the recommended guidelines for the program and for reading food labels.

By following the program guidelines and the label reading guidelines!

Peanuts are a whole natural food but they are high in fat and calorie dense Adding sugar and/or salt to a food that is already limited, only makes it worse.

The regular program allows for the use of nuts and seeds (including peanuts & peanut butter) in limited amounts for those who do not have weight and/or health problems.

Some of you may use the product PB2 in some recipes.

My position, as stated above, still stands.

However, for those of you who use PB2 on occasion, Jif has come out with a new product that would be a better choice. It is just defatted peanut powder with no added salt, sugars and has less fat then PB2, 28% vs 21%.

Here are the numbers compared to a non salt added Peanut Butter and to PB2

Apparently Jif has discontinued their peanut powder. Any other brands better than PB2 to your knowledge? Thanks JoAnn

Here's one: PB2 Pure

Ingredients: Roasted peanuts
No added sugar or salt
22.5% fat.

Here's another: Naked PB

Ingredients: Roasted peanuts
No added sugar or salt
27% fat.

Not sure why one would be 50 calories per serving and the other 60 calories per serving, which skewed the fat percentage...

Thanks!! :)

If you take the sugar out, the calories should go down, which should raise the % fat too.

Here is one reason for the difference in calories.. rounding.

One way to check it is to calculate the calories based on protein, carb & fat grams. To do this, tale the protein & carb grams, add them together & multiple by 4. The take the fat grams, multiply by 9. Then add those 2 numbers together & see what you get. It may not be perfect because the 4 & the 9 are averages too

The other reason is there are several ways to count the calories and they all differ.

I’ll add a link to a discussion on it later.
