10 Secrets To Success
Chef Jeff's Weekly Health Update
December 27, 1999

Everyday, the Investors Business Daily (IBD), lists the "IBD's 10 Secrets To Success". The IBD has spent years analyzing leaders and successful people in all walks of life and found
that most of them have these 10 traits, and, that when combined, can turn peoples dreams into reality. Each day, they highlight one of them.

Many of you have been very successful in business and in other areas of life and have applied and/or utilized many (if not all) of these principles/traits. Yet, many of you still struggle with achieving your health goals and may not realize that these same principles can be used to help you in achieving your health goals also.

This week, I am going to list the IBD's 10 Secrets to Success, and relate them to how they can help you achieve success in healthy living.

1) HOW YOU THINK IS EVERYTHING: Always be positive. Think
success, not failure. Beware of a negative environment.

In order to be healthy, you must believe that you can, that you
can do what it takes, and that you have the resources available
to you. A healthy attitude also has a positive effect on the
body. If you believe it, you will see it. Thoughts held in
mind, produce after their own kind.

2) DECIDE UPON YOUR TRUE DREAMS AND GOALS: Write down your
specific goals and develop a plan to reach them.

If you have never experimented with this one, you are in for a
pleasant surprise. Right down your exact health goals (weight,
cholesterol, blood pressure, exercise level, etc) and everyday
review them and read them out loud to your self. Do this several
times including first thing in the morning and last thing before
you go to bed. Keep the list handy, so that you can review it
during the day also.

3) TAKE ACTION: Goals are nothing without action. Don't be
afraid to get started now. Just do it.

There is no better time to get started then right now. And with
the new year and the new millennium just days away, this really
is a golden opportunity to turn over a new leaf. Begin to
improve your eating habits today and get started on your new
exercise program. Tomorrow never comes.

4) NEVER STOP LEARNING: Go back to school or read books. Get
training and acquire skills.

Read as much as you can about health. Go to health conferences
and workshops. Learn how to shop and/or cook some healthy
meals. Hire a personal trainer or join a gym and find out more
about proper exercise also.

5) BE PERSISTENT AND WORK HARD: Success is a marathon, not a
sprint. Never give up.

Like in all things, there will be some setbacks on the road to
health, and some difficult times ahead. This IS part of the
process. Relapse/setbacks do not equal failure, they are part
of the process of change (and success) that we all go through.
You will also encounter some obstacles. There are not there
as a sign for you to quit, but as a challenge to strengthen
your commitment to reaching your goals.

6) LEARN TO ANALYZE DETAILS: Get all the facts, all the input.
Learn from your mistakes.

This is very important. Don't just believe everything you hear
or read about health. There is plenty of conflicting and
misleading information out there. Find out what is really being
said. Learn to read original research articles and understand
them or find someone to help you do this. Be willing to talk to
the experts and find out as much as you can. Look for proven,
scientific data that has been show to be successful. There are
many quacks and charlatans out there.

7) FOCUS YOUR TIME AND MONEY: Don't let other people or things
distract you.

Health is the result of healthful living. As many of us have
been following unhealthy lifestyles for some time, it will take
some time and some money to learn new habits. Unfortunately, we
live in a world where living healthy is not the norm, so you
will encounter many distractions on the road to health. These
are not reasons to stop, only challenges to overcome.

8 ) DON'T BE AFRAID TO INNOVATE: BE DIFFERENT; Following the herd
is a sure way to mediocrity...

...and ill health. In the US, the average American has a ~50%
chance of dying of heart disease, ~25% chance of dying of cancer
and a ~68% chance of dying of a preventable illness caused by
what they eat and or drink.

Is this the path you want to follow? If you always do what you
have always done, you will always get what you have always
gotten.

In an "insane" society, it is the "sane" person who appears to
be "insane".

Be different Be Healthy!!

9) DEAL AND COMMUNICATE WITH PEOPLE DIFFERENTLY: No person is an
island. Learn to understand and motivate others.

Be willing to join and/or set up support systems to help you.
Company is stronger then will power. Enlist the help of others
when needed, including exercise trainers, experts, cooks, chefs,
doctors, nutritionists, etc.

10) BE HONEST AND DEPENDABLE: TAKE RESPONSIBILITY;
Otherwise numbers 1-9 won't work. :)

Your health is YOUR responsibility and you have to take the
initiative. Don;t wait for some magic bullet or magic pill to
come along. Remember, the big secret in weight loss and health,
is there is no secret. Just proper diet, exercise, and
healthy living.

As 1999 draws to a close, I want to wish all of you the
healthiest and happiest new year ever. May 2000 be the year,
that you reach your health goals.

To your good health!!

Have another great week, and remember...

Your Health Is Your Greatest Wealth!

Thanks for reprinting a great article. I plan on using it today, for health and other areas of my life. I remember IBD from 1999; it was a little different business climate back then! :)

Thanks Jeff for re-posting this. I have suggested over the years that clients read this and use it as a guide. Each of the 10 "Secrets" are all about mindfulness. Happy New Year!

My "tomorrow" took me 22 years, because I didn't knew about that list, lol. Very well written. Words of wisdom don't have an expiration date. So also in 2021 I'd like to thank you for this article. :)
