65 mile bike ride success due to McDougall lifestyle

Postby StarchBeet » Mon Oct 17, 2011 7:26 am

I was shocked on Saturday when I found myself within 3 miles of the finish of the 65 mile bike ride in Salisbury Maryland. I then crossed through the finish line and was so happy that I actually did it. I had plans of being happy with 20-30 miles if I could do that. All I can attribute it to is the wonderful health that comes from cleaning up your system while practicing a "no fat, starchivore lifestyle". Thanks to the McDougalls, again, for what seems like small miracles in my life.

If I figure out how to upload the video I'll link to it. I had to document the success since I could not fully believe I was doing it myself.

Congrats! Did you pull a little one too, or was that someone else's child? That is awesome!

yes blondie, that's my handicapped daughter. The boys did the pulling. My bike won't take the trailer, and I'm not sure how well my muscles would pull her, either.

I wanted to tell one thing that happened on the ride. I went past this one woman who seemed to be struggling quite a bit and it concerned me. So I asked her if she was doing ok. She replied that she'd missed the first rest stop and was out of water. I told her to stop and I'd give her some things.

In preparation for the ride I knew that I had some sweet potatoes and so I made some sweet potato medallions to munch on during the ride. There couldn't be a nicer starch treat to keep you going, in my mind. So I gave the lady a water and I opened up my bag of sweet potatoes and she devoured several hand-fulls. I was very glad I was able to share with her. That poor woman would not have made it much further if she didn't get that needed energy from those great sweet potatoes.

All hail the potato!

Riding your first metric century is a real accomplishment. It takes definite dedication and stamina, and is something that would be out of the question for most folks. Congratulations.

Awesome, that's fantastic! You don't even look trashed in that rest stop photo.

Great idea on the sweet potato medallions. How did you cook them to keep them from being messy?

They were just browned well, but they did get sloppy. Hey, the woman was hungry and she didn't even look twice at their condition. She woofed those handfuls down. I just stored them in a plastic ziplock bag.

I was amazed Chile that while I looked around and could see people "winded" that I don't think I ever felt that way. I only had a sore knee and a stitch in my calf muscle towards the end. I can only figure that's attributable to eating no fat, high complex carb diet! My muscles were tired at the end, especially when the wind picked-up. I ate E2's recipe "Mat Moores enchiladas" the day and night before. McDougall onward, I say
