my Engine 2 diet for 28 days

Postby carollynne » Sun Oct 09, 2011 8:17 pm

Hello, this is me, yes, Carollynne, and I am on a team for the Engine 2 diet, and want to be completely compliant for this period. I have to go do my lab blood report tomorrow and the first pot luck get together is this Thursday. Fun, other vegans getting together!! cool beans!
I got word of the Dr Esselstyn lecture for the public from my cardiologist and went to it with my son who is also vegan. It was great!! I asked him to sign my book!! He is an amazing looking man for his age, as he bounded up the steps and stood the entire time for the lecture! It was a 45 min drive but thru some lovely country roads to get to the Mercersburg Academy. The price was right: free!! the only thing I have pd for is the lab vouchers for myself my oldest son. I am not due any labs til Feb, so I went ahead and pd for them for both of us. Cannot wait to see the numbers.
I need to write daily and commit to doing the entire 28 days with no cheating and lose my last 20 lb!! Nothing would make me happier!
I would love to lose enough wt to be off of my HBP meds too. I will get there, and I ask God to walk beside me every step of each day to keep me on the right path too.
Starting wt is 175.
I have lost about 60 lbs and never thought I'd be in the 150s ever again. cured my NAFLD!! Feel great!! Wt loss is so good for the knees and back, ankle, that I know I will never start back to the SAD way of eating again.

Hi Carollynne!

Sounds great! You mention a "team," do you have others that you are working with for the 28 days?

Where did you see Dr. Esselstyn? I ran in to him this afternoon - that always makes my day!

Let us know your progress.

Be well,

I am just curious why you feel you want to be completely compliant during this period but not the period that you were doing McDougalling? Is it just because you are meeting others in person doing the same thing? I guess it is different meeting people in person than on the boards.

How lucky that you got to meet Dr. Esselstyn in person & Dog, you just run into him on the street? That is pretty cool.

Good luck with your Engine 2 Diet.

Carrollynne--that is fantastic. I didn't know anything about Dr. Esselstyn or his son, wife and great family but I met them during July 2010 Costa Rica Adventure with the McDougalls. I was always enchanted by seeing them swimming in the ocean around 5:30 am as I walked by the over-look to morning breakfast. They were always having a ball and looking so healthy. What a gang!! Now I've read Rips book and will someday read Dr Essy's too. I love their online community which is always full of fun things going on. I'd love to make something like that happen around here. I'm thinking of joining up with a few locals and trying to get something going. How it will shape-up I'm not sure yet.

hi to all, and thanks so much for all your encouragement. I think that being on a team and my 30 yr old son is doing this with me as well, will just help me stay on the WOE. I tend to have a Dh who loves to try to get me to cheat. He is getting used to the fact that I just do not want to and that is that. But truly DS and myself are alone in this huge ocean of SAD eaters. virtually all of my friends, and relatives think I have gone off the deep end again, and on some kind of a band wagon. It just helps to be able to see other adults and not on a DVd or computer community that are doing this WOE. I live in a county of tons of small family farms, and lots of little country stores, and even a Walmart and Kmart too!! But eating this way is truly an abomination to many of my friends and they had to get used to me doing this. And if I was not such a reader and curious about new proven ways to eat, I'd never of lost a lb!! but hey I am doing it, better than ever now. I am planning the team effort and the before and after lab reports to be a real incentive to me. We even have a graduation get together to share our stories on Nov 3rd.
How did I ever hear of this program of the Engine 2 teams? It was an email that my cardiologist shared with me. It had been in our paper but I never was it. Mercersburg is a 45 min drive away but thru lovely country side and all secondary roads too. I had told my doctors, internist and cardio that I went vegan, neither one had any kind of a reaction. !!! Esp the cardio. They just do not get too involved, and I need that I guess. I am really praying that my HBP would clear up and I'd lose enough wt etc etc. He did say, when you lose enough wt, it will. Of course he is talking of the American standards of 110/70!! It might never be that low. I am getting there. Slow but sure. so it was my doctor that told me about the public lecture on the engine 2 diet, it was hosted by the Mercersburg Wellness group, headed by a Elizabeth George, MD. Dr Essy was the speaker this yr. I had to go. since I have devoured all the books on this subject I can get my hands on. from any source. Rip's book is a good one too. I found the recipe that we had on the menu at the plant strong meal after the lecture. The cauliflower soup, that is yumm mee!
One of my biggest things to cheat with is home made bread, GF, sorgum and tapioca flour and that has got to stop. It is no longer candies, or meat or diary, that is long gone.

BTW I was having gall bladder issues, and then the fatty liver situation too (with 2 liver scans a full yr apart that said suspect fatty liver...) and finally my liver enzy came way down, and it was this WOE!! I never was a smoker, or a drinker of caffeine or alcohol and now not even herbal teas!! jeesh. I just drink my green smoothies I make up, or the green juice or water with lemon. My treat is some sparkling water from the Amish bump and dent store, they are divine!!
So thanks a million to all out there, for being with me on this WOE I just need the team feeling I guess. It is so important to my well being. So glad I have my oldest son who loves to cook vegan for us both!!
So thanks to Christine, yes we can do this,k the last 20 lbs. My wt tends to drop a wee bit,and then stabilize for a long time, and then go up and down, and then all over again. But hey I am still at 174-5 and loving it. My clothes are baggy again!!
Starchbeet, I love beets, have you ever had any beets with horseradish as a condiment. I cannot write the word, but it is something I can pronounce in my mother's language anyway. I would love to go on one of the McD adventures, but alas, the money is just not available..... one day, who knows? right? right!
Janiusv2heel. I think I do need the tangible encouragement and not just the virtual type. Esp with a Dh who will not do this will me. I make him up a few things, or buy it frozen for him, as I do not want to ever handle raw met, even with gloves on now that I know too much about it!! Personally I think he is in great shape for his age, and loves the broc, cabbage, cauliflower, etc veggies, brown rice, and salads too. Oh, and V8 low salt. Will not even try my green juice, all fresh and pure!! oh well, right? We all make our own choices and then we live with them too.
Oh yes, the MAC4Wellness teams are full of the people who had signed up after the lecture, WE are having pot luck meals every Thursday in October in the same town, and at a church I need to find on google too. My cardiologist and his wife did too. So cool, he is a bit hvy himself.... he said he never discusses wt with his patients since he is hvy himself. Then he told me that this diet is so compliant difficult.... and he would roll his eyes or look around the room and then I realized that he was talking about himself!! So here I go another day to stay 100% compliant and I will do it!! Thanks again for being so supportive!!

I love your enthusiasm!!! You will do it!! IKWYM about losing, then stabilizing, then bouncing around with weight! For me, 100% compliance is the ONLY thing that EVER works! So glad you've found the support you've been looking for! I wish you all the best, and look forward to hearing all about your success!!! Keep up the great work.

Kirstykay!! I love your quote at the end of your signature, So true, I ask myself where do I want to be in a yr from now? and I think about 25 lbs lighter, and off these dang pills. thanks for the encouragement, I really really want to stick with this for my health and my own well being too. You are so right, 100% compliant is the only way to do it. I honestly have a ton more energy and can get up and start going and keep going all day. It is amazing.
I really am sticking to the MWL from McD not Rip Essy, due to my HBP and all.
So here goes:
BF: some green juice, and steel cut oats with berries
went to fitness center, did exercises for 45 min, then the sauna, and ran errands.
home for
L: spinach salad with no dressing, just some blueberries, peas, and a bit of the spring mix of salad greens with it, then a bowl of my sons' latest creation, the best ever butternut squash Mexican soup, with veggies, and Anasazi beans (spouted and everything......  am I not good at this?) with brown rice and more cauliflower as a base. only water so far. :unibrow:

snack at fitness center, (CFC) was 3 apple slices and one celery stalk cut up. as I did my errands. I seem to be the type to never leave home without my healthy snacks.
I am stuffed right now, but not bloated or horrid feeling in my stomach. cool beans :D

Good day to all out there! a miserable day here, rainy and cold... but I had to go see my Orthopedic doctor, and guess what happened while I was there? The lady who escorts you back, was so shocked to see me, she did a double look at the folder, and said, has it has been awhile since you've been here hasn't it? (almost a yr) then she proceeded to ask if I had lost some wt, and I said yes, about 27 lbs now, and then she smiled and said, you look like a different person to me, and much younger!! wow!! then she added that she wished more people would lose wt for their joints health too.
Can I tell you that I seconded the motion!!! and about smiled myself half to death too.... looking like a different person, and younger? wow!! wish my knees could be better like that, and really my mobility and range of motions had improved vastly with losing wt and exercising. I was asking about the another round of the syn visc injections in both knees. then went off to the fitness center, and was I ever motivated to do the machine room, and then hit the pool and steam room?
BF: one red potato and some carrot/lemon and orange juice
snack after fitness center 1/4 of an orange and some carrot sticks
L: my steel cut oats with berries, and half a peach.
I did excellent yesterday with compliance too, no breads at all,
and this morning, I was greeted with the number 173.2!!
I am still flying so high, and will not let the rain get me down, I have my wii to put on after all, for more exercise today.
I have lost about 60 lbs and never thought I'd be in the 150s ever again. cured my NAFLD!! Feel great!! Wt loss is so good for the knees and back, ankle, that I know I will never start back to the SAD way of eating again.
