Tortillas Dr. McDugall mentioned burritos in interview ?s

Postby Farmerfanny » Sat Feb 06, 2016 4:14 am

I've read the lables on tortilla shells and there is soy bean oil not organic, and they are hydrogenated! Hydrogenating oils pits the arteries! Does anyone have a healthy recipe for corn tortillas I can make with organic corn meal?

I'm also trying to go wheat free using organic brown rice flour now. Gonna try that for flour ones.

I don't think anything labeled "tortilla shells" is going ot be fat-free. Usually they take a decent corn tortilla and deep fry them to make them into hard shells.

Look for a plain old floppy corn tortilla. You can find many brands out there that contain only corn, water and sometimes lime. To make a tortilla shell out of it, just drape your tortilla across the bars of your oven so it's hanging down in an inverted tortilla shell shape. Just bake them up this way until they're the level of crunchiness you want.

explains the details and has a nice photo. Just ignore the direction to use cooking spray on them first.

Make your own if you want to make sure that they are oil free. I have a tortilla press and love it! Once you get the hang of it you can make a bunch in less than an hour. The ingredients are masa flour, water, lime and salt. Plus, they are amazing :D

Look in the refrigerator section of you local big box grocery store for TortillaLand fresh corn tortillas. They contain no added oil, and are gluten-free. You heat them over a dry hot skillet and they puff up like soft pita bread. Bake them in the oven for crispy shells or chips. Amazing  Wherever you would use a tortilla, pita bread, wrap, pizza crust, you can use these.

Thank you all for your suggestions. Don't really care about them being crunchy just need them to be heathy. Masa has gmo corn and flour in it, haven't found an organic masa yet. Just need to know what to mix together that will roll out and stay together.

I like masa but refuse to eat gmo corn. Why can't I make my own masa from organic corn meal and organic brown rice flour?

Just wanted to show the image of the Tortillaland Corn Tortillas. They are easy to find in "super" walmarts and Korger. You have to go to the refrigerated section. They are about 14 cents per tortilla. Very affordable!
