I'm currently 37 years old and I wish I had started this sooner.
I've lost almost 65 lbs so far since last October. I've done minimal exercise (jogging/weight training). Only lately have I needed to calorie restrict (i.e. - not have seconds at dinner )
I love this diet because it doesn't leave me cranky - and it works when you stick with it. I got started on this kick when watching Forks over Knives and seeing the good Doctor there. I did buy the Engine Two diet book - but stopped before I started (probably because I thought the diet would be all squash - which I didn't like too much - and how could you cook without oil?)
Then I went to a programming conference - and a talk by one guy about weight loss made me change. He lost 150lbs - and he said he ate potatoes in his calorie restriction diet. How can he lose weight eating potatoes? I thought carbs made you fat?
I was 250 lbs and when I got home I said "that's it!" I remembered Dr. McDougall from FoK and looked him up and bought the starch solution.
At this point I really need to get a home exercise plan up and running or go back to the gym. As I've changed jobs and lost my old gym. I would like to get to 178 lbs and then say - wherever my weight goes on McDougall is ok - I just won't have seconds for dinner.
I wish I knew about this diet when I was out of college. I had done the zone diet back then to great success (but actually I did it mostly as a vegetarian - only eating tofu and salad). If I was a McDougaller - I probably would have stayed on the diet and *stayed* fit till I was 37 years old. I would have killed a lot less animals, and would have helped the environment too.
I know I couldn't have done it without my wife. She's cooked this WOE and keeps doing it because she sees results in me. She's 80% compliant but is already at a healthy BMI.
