My husband has been McDougalling for about 2 months and is pretty compliant (about 90%). He is 6'1" and wants to get his weight down under 200. He got some lab results back today:

9/1/2011
Weight 219 lbs
Total Cholesterol 237
LDL (Bad) 159
HDL (Good) 47
Triglycerides 155

10/17/2011
Weight 205 lbs
Total Cholesterol 113
LDL (Bad) 50
HDL (Good) 37
Triglycerides 132

Well, I'm impressed -- and really happy that the love of my life is doing so well.

We need to get his HDL numbers up. What has worked for you?

With LDL that low there is no reason to raise HDL. HDL is the vehicle that carts away oxidized LDL. With low LDL no need for carts! Exercise is the typical way most people can raise their HDL. In your case, not necessary.

I agree. To put this in perspective, your husband's TC dropped more than 120 points in 6 weeks. HDL only dropped 10 points. Another comparison: ratio of HDL to TC before = 1:5. Now it's 1:3. The "after" ratio is vastly superior to the "before" number even though the absolute number was somewhat higher before. These numbers are great!

Yup. No reason to worry about HDL w/ LDL that low.

Here's Dr. McDougall on the subject (scroll down):

I'm envious! In 14 weeks of 95-98% compliance, my cholesterol only came down half as much as his (from a similar starting point). Congratulations to you both!
