Ever heard the old saying: "Just waiting for the other shoe to drop." Well that's me. I keep wondering when this miracle way of eating will stop working. When I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, I felt devastated. My younger sister has had very serious diabetes for many years and has had breast cancer, 3 or 4 heart attacks, and many other very serious heath problems. So I pictured myself starting out on a similar path.
My doctor wanted to prescribe Metformin. I asked him to please let me try to do this with diet alone, no drugs. He agreed. But even though I tried the diet approach, I could not keep it up. After a couple of years of this, and my A1c going from 6 to 7 to 8 ... then to 10+, my doctor again told me that it didn't seem that I could manage my diabetes with diet alone. So again, he urged me to take Metformin. He said even if you could bring your blood sugar down with diet, it would be a slow process and would take at least a year.
At that point, I was very discouraged, but decided to get serious and search for a healthy way to eat that would accomplish what seemed impossible, controlling my blood sugar with diet alone.
I am so happy to say that the McDougall Program is the answer for me. Watching youtube videos of Dr. McDougall and those of Chef AJ and others gave me hope and the information I needed to understand that, as Dr. McDougall says: "It's the food!"
Here are examples of my fasting blood sugar readings:

NOTE: I could not have done this without the help of my wonderful family doctor, who totally supports me and believes in the McDougall program. I feel such a blessing to have a medical doctor who allows me to have a say in the treatment of my health. He has looked me straight in the eye and given me his medical advice, while saying to me: it's your decision. What a gift!
