Oat, Rice, and Wheat Bran Question for Jeff

Postby VeggieSue » Sat Dec 29, 2018 11:00 am

I've been assuming things like oat, wheat, and rice bran would not be allowed on MWLP because they're processed, extractions from the whole grains.

On one of the MWLP FB groups the owner is doing daily readings for discussion from the MWLP book, and today she posted:

A Few Further Considerations

These additional ideas for weight loss may have some small value to you.

Fiber supplements may increase weight loss by reducing the proportion of food that is digested, and by lowering blood insulin and blood sugar. Use either soluble fibers, such as guar gum, oat bran, or rice bran; or insoluble fibers, such as wheat bran. The soluble fibers are particularly effective at lowering insulin and blood sugar.

I said we should ask Jeff for a ruling. :)

Has it been changed so that these brans are no longer allowed, or are they okay to add to our foods and I just mis-remembered reading they weren't?

Thanks for your guidance.

Correct.

As you know, while the original book is of value for the basic overview, there have been several updates which are covered here

and here

They would be much better off reviewing the newsletter and the check list.

We do not recommend supplements including fiber supplements or extracted isolated food products (Bran, germ, etc). These do absolutely nothing to address the real reasons someone is overweight. Their impact, if any, is negligible and may be only be of some minor relevance, if any, to someone following a typical American, highly processed, low fiber diet. But then, adding bran to that diet is not the solution.

However, someone following the MWL program is already consuming a minimally processed, very high fiber diet, so there is no relevance.

Thank you for posting here and asking.

While we know they mean well, we continue to receive complaints about the information given out in many of these groups. You can find old recommendations, like for Vitamin E, which we now know are potentially harmful, etc.

Well, you did recently write if there were any questions about current MWLP guidelines to ask you, so on that community we decided to do just that. We do keep to the "100% McDougall" rules there.

Thanks, again.
