Why I Weigh Myself Everyday - Fluctuations!

Postby Bougainvillea » Tue Sep 19, 2017 11:33 am

It amazes me how much my weight fluctuates day to day. And I know some advocate not weighing yourself every day because of the fluctuations. But, I have decided that the opposite view works better for me.

The reason is, that today I hit my all-time low so far of 195. Now, yesterday I was 197. I've been up and down between 196 and 198 over the last week. What if I missed those lower-weight days? I'd have been so depressed thinking I wasn't making any progress!

It may not work for everyone, but the way my body works and how it's losing weight, is it's like one of those pendulums in a planetarium that goes back and forth and eventually works it's way to the next piece of chalk on the floor that it knocks over LOL. If you've never seen one like the old one in San Francisco, you'll have no idea what I'm talking about.

But, now I don't get depressed if I get up and the scale says I've gained two pounds, as long as the pendulum continues to swing lower in the overall process. Plus, when I see the scale go up a couple pounds, it actually helps to keep me on track.

I hope that made sense. I'm just throwing this out there, in case it might be helpful to someone else. :)

I weigh everyday as well. I made a chart showing every pound between my starting weight and the weight that charts say I should weigh. Every time I hit the next number, I write the date next to it. If there is a blank spot between 2 numbers, it means that I lost 2 pounds in a day. This is a record of the day I hit such-and-such number. It encourages me to see the progression in this format... I'm not focusing on the fluctuations, but on the downward trend. Don't know if that comes across well.

This is an example:
195 12/24/2012
196
197 12/20/2012
198 12/19/2012
199 12/15/2012
200 12/12/2012
Started 2019 @ 345
Goal 1 - 310 / 06/21/19
Goal 2 - 279 / ???

I forgot to include that I also write the number of days it took to hit the next number. Over time, this will slow, but the trend will clearly be visible.

Yes! This is exactly what I'm talking about. Thank you for responding. It's helpful to me to see how the progress works. I know that at the end of the month, if I've lost x number of pounds, then there is the proof - but for my encouragement, I need daily encouragement.

In the last 10 months I have lost nearly 85lbs. I find it helpful to use google calendar and add my weight nearly every day. I have approximately 20 Lbs left to lose and progress has slowed but I always input my weight and then go back to exactly 30 days and as long as I am less than I was 30 days ago I consider it progress.
