Good group. Hope more folks will join us. I imagine in January we will have more participants. I like to have the support. I am really close to goal weight so I have to be really strict about adding in anything with more calorie density.... good luck everyone. I have a flight to MX city this week so I'm packing some veggie bean burgers and fruit and greens to take with me. My husband has a rare auto immune condition which requires him to see his specialist in DF every 3 months...the doctor thinks diet has nothing to do with his largely speedy recovery! The "Wegener's" is in remission. He's very healthy and not overweight aside from this condition and WFPBNO with me for the last 10 years. Keep healthy everyone...Dlee

I'm hoping I'll be able to report a weight this coming week under 175 as I had 174.4 this morning. I'ts the first time I've weighed under 175 since college or maybe high school. I.e. about 50 years ago. BTW, we should see if Dr. McDougall can mention the Weigh-in group in the upcoming newsletter as when that happens it can send over lots of new people.
I'm just here for the food.

Dave - With regards to the new low weight, congrats! That kind of milestone is so inspiring.

Dlee - Someone in my social circle has recently been diagnosed with Wegener's and he is in his mid-thirties. I'm glad to hear that your husband is doing so well. I wish I could let this family know about the benefits of changing their diet to help manage symptoms.

I think more people will definitely be interested in joining us in the New Year. Sometimes big dietary changes are just too difficult, especially with the steep learning curve surrounding this way of eating, to tackle during December's hustle and bustle. JeffN tells me that he will try to garner interest through some promotion on social media for next month.

Having a support group is so important to staying the course, in my opinion. Today I went to a local McDougall potluck, and enjoyed the food and festivities. The host even quizzed us on our knowledge of The Starch Solution and The Healthiest Diet on the Planet. LOL... I didn't do as well on the "fun" quiz as I thought I would, it seems I'm more concept than detail oriented.

Delicious recipes from The Healthiest Diet on the Planet (fruit cobbler) and The China Study All Star cookbook (breaded eggplant), as well as a few home-made recipes (potato sauerkraut casserole) and kale salad were delicious. My daughter even baked us some oil-free vegan Christmas gingerbread sharks, because nothing says Happy Holidays like a good gingerbread shark.
(Also pictured was warm lentil salad, a grain and bean salad, a delicious spiralized zucchini salad, bread pudding, baked potatoes and fresh fruit).

Hi all,
December almost over, but am excited to find this group, and would like to join. I rarely tell anyone how much I weigh.. LOL ... only my family doctor and my therapist know. But here it is...
Weight just prior to beginning Dr.M's starch solution eating program approximately
4 weeks ago, was 222...
A few days ago, I weighed 212.
A weight loss of 10 lbs.
I'm happy with that. - glo

PS... ooops, not sure if I should join or not. Following as best I can, but I do use corn meal and a gluten free mix combined to make skillet cakes occasionally, and corn tortillas on occasion. If this disallows me from joining, please will someone
Let me know :)

Hi Glo! - You are definitely welcome to join up. We are all eating as close to the MWL guidelines as we can. No judgements on little differences at all (I eat way more fruit than the guidelines suggest). The main goal is to get a little weight off while eating until full, and you are doing fabulously so far.

Darnold - We missed you last week, I'm glad it was just time getting away from you.

See you all onFriday! Or sooner if you just want to chat.

Tonight I am planning my shopping list for all of the holiday meals my family is a part of. My parents are going to stay with us for one night, so I have a dinner and a brunch to plan. I, then, have 2 more Christmas dinners to bring a couple of dishes to. So far none of the feast meals are MWL, but all are McDougall-y meals. One is even a recipe from his and Mary's new book. I do wonder if I will have a net gain for that week; 4 higher calorie density meals, many oil-free yet still high fat treats coupled with my propensity to overeat those. Hmmm...I am beginning to wonder whether tonight is an exercise in planning to stay on track or planning to fail. It's a much finer line now that I have much less weight to lose. Anyhow, I'm just trying to say I'm going to do my best and not let slip-ups send me off the path. (I'll report my holiday meals in the Journal forum, so if you're interested in seeing how I fare then check them out).

Er... I'd be happy to join and post my losses and gains, but I'm not really on the MWL plan. I am in transition between a SAD diet and the McDougall diet. My goal is to shift toward the McDougall diet full-time, but right now it is probably 80-20... maybe 90-10 on a good week.

My wife and I eat out once a week, and during those meals I don't consider food at all. The meal is about good conversation and good music in a relaxing environment. Baked Atlantic salmon with rice and veggies is my favourite (oil on the veggies, I'm sure), but any type of ethnic food is fair game, including Cajun and Basque. I am also partial to Linguiça and eggs for breakfast (once a month).

But aside from eating out, I am trying to follow the McDougall plan and most of the MWL plan...

Debbie wrote:Program outlined in the MWL book, page 60.
1. Eliminate All Animal Foods
2. Eliminate All Oils
3. Eliminate All High Fat Plant Foods: Nuts, Nut Butters, Seeds, Seed Butters, Avocados, Coconut, & Olives.
4. Eliminate All Flour Products
5. Eat Whole Grains and Potatoes
6. Eat Legumes
7. Make Green & Yellow Vegetables One-Half to One-Third of your meal
8. Eat Uncooked Foods
9. Restrict Fresh Fruit to No More Than Two Servings a Day, and Avoid Dried Fruit, Fruit Puree, and Fruit Juice
10. Use Simple Sugar Sparingly

... with the following exceptions:

I add small amounts of store-bought baked tofu to my salad (oil).
I sometimes add sunflower seeds to my salad (but not lately).
I eat whole wheat pasta daily.
I sometimes eat corn+wheat tortillas as a snack.
I eat a lot of fruit (6-8 servings a day).

So, I'm not really sure I should be posting here (that's why I started my journal!), but I'll stop by to cheer everybody on!

What you are doing seems to be working for you, so just keep at it. Please do cheer us on and I am doing the same for you. Is your wife eating this way too?
I am finding that I need to eat lower and lower calorie density after each chunk of weight that I lose. I'm at that stage that my regular McDougall plan is not providing any more weight loss. So, I will adjust...very slowly and with a bit of foot dragging, maybe some stomping too. :D
Best wishes for the holidays!

Sudden trip to see a precious family member in hospital. Serious condition. So may not be able to post, but pretty weight is the same as last post. Loss would be same also.
Kudos to all. - glo

So sorry. :( Hope everything turns out okay! Be safe.

No. I think she's receptive to the idea... but the logistics are a major obstacle. My plan is to do the grunt work -- learn how to make this diet work -- and then start helping her. I work out-of-town a lot, but I'm hoping that will change and I will be able to make lunches and cook dinner for her. I'm sure she'd eat anything I cooked. :)
