November 2016 McDougall Weigh In Group

Postby amandamechele » Sat Nov 05, 2016 9:49 pm

Hello All!

I have been lucky enough to get the chance to continue the wonderful work that Debbie has been doing here on the MWL forum with the monthly weigh ins. Thank you so much Debbie! I look forward to going through some of your many, many threads to figure out all that I need to know to help keep everyone as motivated and inspired as you have. :)

My name is Amy and I have been following the McDougall Plan, on and off for many years. The past couple of years have been much more on than off, and I have lost many many pounds and improved my health. This was thanks to getting the opportunity to go to the 10-day program in Santa Rosa. It inspired me to continue to try harder to adhere to the program guidelines and accept that this is how I will eat for the rest of my life. My body has been thanking me for making this decision every day since then!

I am at a point where my weight loss has come to a full halt and I must lower my calorie density for it to continue. The next natural step for me is to follow the MWL program full-time. I'm hoping for a whole bunch of support and inspiration from everyone who participates here, that I will (of course) reciprocate :o . I have found that surrounding oneself with people doing the same thing, at the same time has been one of the many keys to continued success.

I am going to start off each week telling you something that I am grateful for. A podcast that I listen to, called The Plant Trainers, does this and I find it always makes me stop and reflect on the good things in my life (even when I'm struggling through an otherwise hard week).

This week I am grateful for the extra hour of sleep I will be getting tonight!

FOR THIS WEEK ONLY, IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO POST YOUR FRI/SAT WEIGH IN SOMETIME BEFORE TOMORROW EVENING (SUNDAY) AT 5PM, I WILL INCLUDE IT IN THIS WEEK'S TOTAL. If no one posts, we will just have to have a 0 weight lost for this week, but then we can continue from there)

Here is a look at my progress so far:
ImageImage

I'm looking forward to chatting with everyone and wish you all a wonderful November 2016!

Amy

Here are the standard monthly instructions for participating in this thread:

1) Please make sure you make a new post every week when you post your weigh ins. If you only edit your very first post in the thread, I will never find it. Thanks. :)

2) A note from Jeff Novick RD

FYI

For the newcomer, I collated this from some earlier threads....

Here is a refresher on some guidelines for posting here and participating in our monthly weigh-in thread.

Our weigh in's are on Fridays and you have until 12 PM PST on Saturday to report.

Anyone is welcome to join the weekly weigh in group as long as they follow the McDougall principles. We recommend following the Maximum Weight Loss (MWL) plan or the Mary's Mini's Plan.

There is a sticky at the top of this forum on the guidelines for the MWL program.

In order to tally the results please submit your results by posting the total pounds you have lost or gained that week. You don't have to share your total weight if you'd rather keep that to yourself. This is an honor system so we take the gain, loss or maintain you give us in order to tally.

If you are a new member and would like to join but don't have a weight to be counted for the week then you will be counted either as a body with a zero starting weight, or when you check in for the weekly weigh in the following week. Large amounts of weight lost over a period of months or weeks, prior to joining the weekly weigh in group, will not be counted towards the weekly total.

If you measure your weight in something other than pounds please convert the measurement to pounds.

All gains will be counted towards the total to encourage weekly participation. Posting is encouraged whether it's a gain, a loss, or a maintain.

You are welcome to share as little or as much as you want on your weight loss journey here in this thread. We encourage members of the group to talk to each other, cheer each other on and set goals together.

This thread is for the mutual support of all who wish to participate.

See you all this Friday and Saturday!"

Hi Amy,

thank you for taking over Debbie's job and keeping the group running. I've been away for a bit. I hope nothing has happened to Debbie and that she's just taking more me time at the moment.

I'm only just back on track so won't post a weight today but hope to add to the total group weight loss next week. :-D

So, have a good week ahead everybody and I'll see you at the weigh in next Saturday.

Kerstin :-D

Hi Everyone,

I'm happy to see we are starting off November with a loss (no thanks to me...lol)! How wonderful.

Great work this week JaneyKhan and Chickpeababy! Do you have any advice for those of us who didn't lose anything (namely, me)?

Thank you for the kind words, Kerstin. I'm glad you will be joining us next week. I don't have any information on why Debbie is no longer doing the posts, but I imagine it is as you say, she probably was ready to pass on the baton to the next runner. I wish her all the best and can only attempt to fill her shoes.

Next weigh in is on Friday, November 11th, 2016.

Welcome amandamechele. Thanks for posting results. You look great. Congratulations on your progress. When I weighed in on Friday I was spot on; no loss, no gain (0.0).

Congratulations to all the losers. Hope everybody has a great week. I don't think I'll be able to weigh in this week, so post again next week(11/18).

Hello, I'm new to the forum.
I have been eating a wholefoods plant based diet for two weeks now.
I have just under 100 pounds to lose, but my main motivation is gaining health and energy.

Last week I lost 2.43 pounds (244.79 to 241.84)
I will weigh in on Friday and report my loss for the week.

Hi Mark, thank you and I'm glad you will be joining us later in the month. Good luck for the next couple of weeks.

Arewethereyet: fantastic job so far! How are you finding it? What has been keeping you motivated for the past two to three months?

Hi Nairnejay! Welcome! How did you find us? I'm always so curious. What have you been eating for the past two weeks? Did you have to make big changes?

I found the forum when I searched for wholefoods plant based forums, I think.
I've watched Forks Over Knives a handful of times but this time I think I've finally been ready to make the change.
My husband has been vegetarian for 40 years and I went vegetarian when we met.
However, being cheese lovers I had never made the leap to vegan. In fact I had even started adding meat back to my diet occasionally to try and lose weight.
After having 3 children and feeling so exhausted all the time, as well as being nearly 50kg/100 pounds over my ideal weight, I knew I had to do something drastic, so that I could avoid diabetes and live life to the full.
I watched FOK again and used Dr McDougall's website to guide me on what to eat.

Now I eat a bowl of rice with bananas or mango, and a splash of soymilk for breakfast.
Lunch is either another bowl of rice, with edamame, carrots, tofu and broccoli, or a salad wrap.
Anytime I feel like a snack I have an apple.
Dinner is trickier but I've so far been able to modify my family's favourite dishes so that they're vegan and low fat.
For example, we've had sushi, rice paper rolls, potatoes with steamed veggies, bean burgers with corn on the cob, baked potatoes with bean chilli, pizza (no cheese), hidden veg pasta, etc.

I don't know that it qualifies as MWLD as I do eat avocado, but I figure it's from a wholefood source, plus I'm just getting used to being dairy free and I need to have one indulgence! I'm losing plenty of weight so perhaps if that slows down in future I'll consider dropping the avos.

Also, Hi! from South Australia :)

Hi Amy! Thanks for alerting me to this Weigh In Group!
I prefer to weigh monthly, but I've been doing well this week with food and activity, so I plan on weighing in on Friday to see where I'm at. Maybe I'll weigh in 2x/month - on the 15th and 30th/31st of the month. I just can't do the weekly thing, it's too stressful for me.

Nairnejay - I feel like you just wrote about so many of our lives, and yet it's funny how alone we can feel on this journey to healthy eating. I'm a mom too, and had a similar amount of weight to lose. I'm glad you are making such great changes. Feeding a family can be tough when everyone isn't eating quite the same way. It is hard work that is worth it! However, it sounds like your family has come around quite quickly! :) Keep us posted!

Judith - I'm so glad you joined! I don't weigh myself weekly either, so I will just be posting 0s during the weeks I don't weigh in. I'm still deciding about 1 or 2x per month also. My relationship with the scale is not a completely rational one, so I get it. Enjoy the rest of your week and I'll hear from you this weekend.

I find being prepared is the easiest way to stay on track. Each week, I cook a couple of soups/chilis, chop vegetables and fruit, and have pre-made potatoes, rice and pasta ready and waiting.

Here is a look at my fridge on a typical Monday or Tuesday morning:

Good Friday Afternoon!

It's weigh-in day! Please post your numbers sometime before tomorrow at noon PST.

So...I weighed in. I hadn't weighed myself in 3 weeks, since finishing a 10-day Mary's Mini (which I photographed and wrote about in the Journal Forum of this website).

I got on the scale, determined the number, and here are the thoughts that went through my head:

Holy crap...really? Did I loosen the reigns that much?

...and other iterations like: How's it going to look that I gained weight...this is going to be embarrassing...maybe I just won't weigh in this week...

Run, hide, and don't look back.

Even an old thought process that I thought I had banished floated up from the past....What is wrong with me?

This is the relationship that many of us have with the bathroom scale and with ourselves. Our self worth seems so easily manipulated by a single number. As I said to Judith, in a post somewhere above, I don't have a completely rational relationship with the scale for this exact reason. But is it really the number or is it knowing that you could have done just a bit more for yourself?

So where am I trying to go with this, and how does it tie in with this MWL forum?

We are here to support each other through trials and successes because this is how we get our lives and our health back. Some of you will be eating the MWL version of the McDougall Plan for a short time, in order to get some weight off, and then return to the regular plan. Some of us will need to eat this way indefinitely to reach our own personal goals. Some of you will find this easy, and some of us will not. Just don't stop trying! That is what will get you there.

Well, I am up 4 pounds since the last time I weighed myself on October 22nd. :| Since my weight gain encompasses a period before this month's timeframe I'm not exactly sure how to deal with it, so I will just insert it as a gain for the week.

I may as well stop being so cagey with my stats, since I'm going to be posting about them so much. :?

Highest Weight: 237 lbs
Current Weight: 143.5 lbs
Goal 1: BMI 24.9: 129.5
Goal 2: To be determined
Week of 04/11/16-11/11/16: +4 lbs

May all of you have a fun and restful weekend! XO
