Starches: cooking, boiling, microwaving, canned

Postby Rhythm » Sat Jun 25, 2016 1:02 pm

Hi. I am diabetic and am preparing to do TSS The Starch Solution diet
and/or the Maximum Weight Loss Program.

Since most starches I know need to be cooked,
and my access to cooking is minimal except for
usual microwave access, is there anything major
wrong by getting some starches from CANNED beans
or other canned foods such as corn?

Of course I know fresh is best, but still dried beans
and corn and grains need to be prepared and cooked.
I see beans and corn from frozen are good for me,
but are CANNED beans and corn OK to help add to my starch requirements?

The main problem with canned food is sodium. There are low and no sodium canned foods available, but the selection is more limited. For some canned foods, like beans, rinsing can reduce sodium. As for the microwave, it's easy to cook potatoes and sweet potatoes in one, and there are microwavable rice bowls. Oats merely need soaking, or can be microwaved to be hot.

Great. I do the microwaved potatoes.
It is the beans, peas and lentils.
Good to know they are OK if getting the sodium out.

Another problem solved. Thanks again.

Hi Rhythm,

In addition to canned foods without added salt, frozen foods can also be cooked quickly in a microwave. Most markets carry green vegetables, corn, and even beans and brown rice in the frozen foods section.

Yes. Pre-cleaned and pre-cut/sliced fresh and frozen vegetables
are awesome and help minimize food prep time.
Corn and peas are easy to find in the frozen section.

Beans and lentils are the major ones for me as I need to fill half my plate
with starch and am seeking additions to potatoes, rice, pasta, bread,
wheat, oats, barley, etc.

I suspect that potatoes, yams, rice, corn and pasta will be my main sources
along with beans and lentils. Just need to find beans that are quick to prepare.

Thank you.
