Vanita,

Here are a couple of links to the program outlines.

http://www.fatfree.com/diets/mcdougall.html
http://www.drmcdougall.com/misc/2006nl/ ... 0marys.pdf

To summarize:

Regular Plan: No meat, diary, oil/fat of any kind

MWL: Also no flour products, soy foods like tofu, avocado, coconut, nuts/seeds, fruit juice, dried fruit

Mary’s Mini: Generally limited to one starch eaten at every meal. If you choose grain/rice you can add a little fruit and veggies – but you could just eat sweet potatoes and nothing else. This is more of a diet then a lifetime eating plan.

If you look in the food forum you’ll see two sticky posts with recipes from the McDougall newsletter that I’ve divided into MWL and Non-MWL. http://www.drmcdougall.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=5 This should also help you to see the different choices available to you.

I also have blog that has only MWL recipes on it. http://mwlfood.wordpress.com/

===========================

Good morning all. I’m down another 1.6 pounds this week. On plan and planning to stay that way. I’m off to change my ticker.

Postby txjack » Thu Apr 09, 2009 9:12 am

First week here.
Started 283 lbs
4/2/09 283
4/9/09 277 down 6

Had a blood sugar spike last night, probably too many grains and not enough vegetables (Ok, no probably). What has been great so far is that when my sugars to go up higher than what I would want, they drop very rapidly. Normally, my high reading for the day is after breakfast, still half of what it would have been previously but higher than the norm. The rest of each day has been super. Yesterday, 2 hours after an apple -- 117. Before it would have been double that, even with 90-95 units of Lantus (now on Novilin 70/30).

I thought I heard Dr. McDougall mention that when you eat higher fats that the sugars don't metabolize as well. Previously, if I had the reading that I had last night -- this morning would have normally been WAY over 200. It was 149. (I don't even want to say what it was last night -- haven't seen that number since starting the program.)

So far, things are looking great. Sugars, meds, insulin down and lost weight to boot!! Still have some bouts of fatigue but energy levels are also up.

Thanks for all who have welcomed me and thanks for the support.

Down 3 pounds this week.

Very happy. :D

This works when we do it!

We can do this!

I lost 3.5 pounds and really happy about that! I went to my yoga class this morning and really enjoyed it. The couple that taught the class were so nice and helpful and I was able to stick out the entire hour and a half. :D

Debbie R—so happy you have a "real life" McD buddy! That will probably help a lot. Will your friend be joining the board?? :)

HealthE1—Thanks for the kick in the pants! Haa! I am delighted to have lost, mainly because I've not lost in a while—but you're absolutely right that when you see what a pound looks like, and FEELS like, it's certainly to be celebrated! So, thank you! :-)

Letha—When summer comes along, you're right I prefer to do outdoor exercise, and I only go to the gym on a bad day [rainy/too hot]. I would love to go hiking but around central Ohio there's not very good hiking—it's very flat here [I so miss my east coast mountains!]. Last summer I biked a minimum of three times a week, either a 16-mile bike-path ride, or bike to work—which is 8 miles one way. And you know it's slightly uphill all the way to work...so I'm good and sweaty when I arrive, and then have a VERY easy and nice ride home in the evening! I'm looking forward to doing that again this summer. "Bike to work" week is the middle of May, and I'm hoping to start then...I don't have fancy rain gear or anything, so I have to stick with fair-weather riding. I joined a hiking group recently in the hopes that I can be exposed to better hiking...have yet to go on one though!! :D Time enough, when life isn't so crazy.

LauraA—I am so happy for you that you're going to Australia! [It has been my dream—but all truth be told, I'm afraid if I ever go—I'd never leave!] Please share as many stories from the road as you can—what an adventure. Safe travels! :-D

Hi everyone!

I'm down a pound this week and very excited about being below 200 again (hopefully soon). I haven't been there since before having my children (8 years).

I feel fantastic and every day this lifestyle becomes more natural to follow. I am planning on trying a "Pork" roast from Bryanna Clark Grogan for Easter Sunday. It's a feast day. Not only have I gained control of my eating but I feel like a happier person because nothing has been killed for me to eat. I feel more peaceful. I didn't start this plan for ethical reasons, but I find with every month that goes by, I am becoming more aware of it.

I hope everyone has a healthy upcoming week.

I'm up .5 lb :-(

I'm not sure how to bust out of this plateau I've hit. I cut back on the excersize. I wonder if I should do the 12 day program? I'm so afraid of putting the weight back ON tho...whaddya'll think?

Hey Stormie,
I think thats a wonderful idea. Do the regular 12 day program and just get back into the grove of things. Try to be 100% with the regular mcdougall and see what happens, then after the 12 day you could take out nuts or WWbread which ever one you eat too much of more and see how your loss goes doing more of the MWL.
I remember you talking about Weight Watchers last week, dont do it. You know this works and its the healthiest way to go. Theres no possible way if we were to eat 100% McDougall that we wouldn't lose weight. If we don't eat fat there will be no fat. Good luck, i hope everything works out for the best! :-D

Can I join in the middle of the month?

Can I join if my plan is to eat *mostly* MWL but allow my self "12-day" treats occasionally?

My plan is to eat a pseudo-Mary-Mini -- oatmeal for breakfast, barley or brown rice for lunch and dinner, cooking a big batch of rice or barley to eat for several days. So not quite a strict Mary Mini, but still with the spirit of one, I think.

I guess I should get a ticker to track my weight. I have one that I started awhile back, but I wasn't on plan and it was headed the wrong way. So I'll start one that starts *today* ...

Today I'm on plan and planning to stay that way. :)

A good day today. Cherry pie zucchini oats for breakfast..I finished em off!

A baked potato, pinto beans, corn and salsa for lunch and a salad and a baked potato with green beans for dinner..oh and 3-2-1 dressing.

So, I just started cooking a huge batch of the cherry-zucchini oats again and I discovered that someone used all the steel cut oats..hmmmm...and I have plenty of old fashioned oats so they will have to do...oh and the cherries were missing from the freezer so this batch is cooking with strawberries... :D

I'm sure they will be fine though..and I worked out for an hour today..

WE can do this!

I gained 1.8 pounds this week. :-( I'm not happy, but not surprised. After all, I had PIE this weekend. And then there was the shameful potato chip incident. But I'm owning up to my slipups and moving on!

On a positive note, I got my copy of the New McDougall Cookbook in the mail today! I found it on a book swap site and was SO excited about it! So now I will have a fresh batch of tasty recipes to inspire me. And I'm also looking into buying some turbo jam DVDs off of craigslist. Also very exciting. I know a book or DVD is not a magic bullet that will fix everything. I know I'm still down overall this year, but I feel like I'm sliding in the wrong direction. I hope my new book, my new exercise DVDs, and lots of posting here on the site will give me momentum in the right direction to get me over this slump I seem to have fallen into.

cowgirrlup, I have to say that you are an inspiration to me. You bravely post your gains and losses and keep sticking with the plan, knowing that you are on the right track. For someone like me who is struggling, that is so encouraging and motivating. Thank you! And thank you to all of the other encouraging people here!

weigh in Thursday

Postby Riva » Thu Apr 09, 2009 11:20 pm

Stable: no gain or loss.
This last week of tax season is challenging and my goal is to stay on plan.
Weight loss is not the issue for this coming week.

I have situated my new knit/crochet/art group at a vegan/partially raw food cafe. Of course you can eat quite high fat there but my kind of food is available.

Fun to read all your posts.
Gotta go to sleep.

Mary-shameful potato chip incident is the funniest thing I've read in a while, thanks for that! :D Some times the right book , DVD or class can make all the difference, I've been really encouraged by a McD DVD that I ordered. My husband even watched it with me and we are really encouraged to stick with the program.

Reva-I am so jealous! There is one mostly vegetarian place that is an hours drive away but that is it. I would love to have a vegan cafe close by, how fun. :)
