I'm going to use this as a way to motivate myself to keep high fat foods and added fats out of my meals.

Green will mark a no-fat day; red is added fats day (butter, regular salad dressing, etc) or if I eat something off plan; yellow is a day when I had high fat foods such as nut butters or avocado.

Jan 31 edit to change: no longer going to mark days yellow for having a high fat food WITHIN A MEAL. Since right now my goal is to get to McDougall compliance, and my biggest bugaboo is added fats, I am going to go into February marking only red and green. If I have more than one meal in a day that has high fat, McDougall compliant ingredients, such as avocado or nut butters, I'll mark that day yellow. If I eat packaged food that has oil as an ingredient, I'll go yellow for that. Also, if I happen to eat something high fat but compliant for a snack, I'll mark that day yellow, as well. But right now I'm not even trying to stay on MWL...just wanting to have a few days in a row that have no added refined fats or oils (like yesterday's salad dressing ack!)
Once I get myself in order for the processed fats, I'll venture into MWL and possibly re think my "settings" here.

I'm doing this because it turns out, I've been able to give up all the animal foods no problem, but it's been hard to ditch the fats, and I've gained back into the obese category, and I need to put a stop to it. Starting yesterday, a Monday. and making it a goal to have 21 green days in a row. And of course, zero red days.

Yesterday for lunch I brought a big container of potato soup to work and wasn't able to finish it, leaving a little less than half. So I had the rest for lunch today, and it wasn't enough. There is this dry soup stuff in the break room and I had some of that, and it filled me up...but wow, the sodium! So I'll be packing bigger lunches.

Dal over baked potato tonight, with steamed broccoli. Yum! And now I'm hungry and I've got about an hour before I'll see dinner. won't it taste SO good!

This morning I was deeply tempted to have some of that risotto from the other day, with a couple of fried eggs (or even soft boiled) over it...and knowing that this little calendar is here made me choose oatmeal for breakfast instead! Proud of myself.

Eggs are an issue. I've been having a couple of eggs probably twice a month for MONTHS now. LOVE THEM. I mean, I choose cage free or free range, so there's less guilt about THAT part, but I know I have to get them out of my diet if I want to take off the poundage...:(

But I found out there is something called The Vegg, which it sounds like it duplicates egg yolk pretty nicely. It has a short ingredients list including nooch and black salt, with "sodium alginate"... and from what I've read, it has the same creamy texture, good enough to dip toast in!

Tomorrow is payday; I am going to get me some Veggs. Yum!

so, I take public transport to work and have my alarm set for taking the SECOND train, but that gets me to my transfer barely on time, or late some days, so today I got the first train, which means getting out of the house about 25 minutes earlier than normal. Which meant this morning that my alarm got me up without that usual time to make a cup of tea, read a while. I got up, took a shower, got dressed, and had time to grab some granola bars and an apple...quick breakfast. But the granola bars have oil in the ingredients list, so I'm giving myself a yellow for today.

And setting my alarm for a half hour earlier, to give myself the MUCH NEEDED morning time.

Busy in the kitchen. I made some cauliflower taco filling a la' Brand New Vegan and also making not cheese sauce from the same blog. I've got eight cups of rice made, and going to make a big batch of Thai Curried Rice...MY FAVORITE! from Starch Solution. The not cheese sauce will be for Mac n Not Cheese. So I'll have Taco fixins, a rice dish, a macaroni dish, and I also have just good old potatoes, five lbs of gold, five lbs of russet. And quite a bit of extra rice. I also have dal in the freezer.

Ooh! I want to make the Garlic Alfredo sauce from BNV too. Over linguine. With broccoli on the side. :) mmmmm!

It feels really good to have some energy! My cupboards need straightening out :D

My air fryer came yesterday! It makes things crispy! Little counter-top convection cooker that I'm going to use a LOT. Nothing to it but slicing the potatoes, seasoning, and put them in for 20 minutes at 400*. No parboiling, no shaking with their seasonings and flour. Just slice, season, and cook. This morning I'm planning hashbrowns. We'll see how frozen potatoes do in my new toy.

Oh, another thing that arrived was some Vegg vegan egg yolk. I LOVE eggs. And the yolk is the best part. And I LOVE easy over fried egg over the Thai Curried Rice that is my favorite recipe in Starch Solution. Well let me just say, Vegg fake egg yolk tastes delicious...like actual egg yolk...and it is not hyper processed. Short, pronounceable ingredients list. Just nooch, black salt, and something alginate. I'm pleased as punch, as I think this stuff will keep me from feeling like I must crack an egg over my rice dishes. (My favorite way to eat eggs: With Thai Green Curried Rice)

Yesterday we went up to my mom's to hang out and happened to be there at lunch time. She had some stir fry ingredients, so I whipped those together, and used the packet of sauce, which contains oil. I had mine over just regular spaghetti noodles. It was tasty and filling! Then at home, i put together a quinoa salad and didn't want it, so I also had some Goya brand beans and rice which cooked up in a half hour. The quinoa salad will be good tonight for dinner.

Now this is why I chose colored emojis to make my calendar, and also to mark each meal...You can see at a glance how things have gotten greener since I started. Part of that is because I'm determined to settle into this way of eating again, but part of it is knowing I'm recording my meals here, I WANT green on that calendar, so I CHOOSE meals that are 100% on plan.

Looking at all my meals lots of  but counting them and doing the math it comes to 80% compliance. Of course, the days are over half non-compliant, because I count it a yellow or red day if I eat one meal with off plan ingredients. *sigh*

but I must say, I'm improving and I am head and shoulders above where I was a month ago. :)

Funeral coming up, today is the viewing, and it is out of town, and Wylie is already there getting things done today, so I am relying on public transportation for getting there. To that end, I didn't bring a lunch box with me to work today, because I'm going straight after work by bus, trax, and train, to a town about an hour away. I didn't want to haul my empty lunchbox, so I didn't bring lunch. There is a Subway in our area, so I'm going to buy a veggie, no oil added, samwich, 12"...eat half for lunch, and save half for my journey to the viewing.

I've counted all meals as green, however I don't know what might happen with the family once I get there. If we all decide to go out for something, or whatever. So...I won't count the day as a green day until it is all over.

The Funeral Weekend was full of flubs for me. Friday night, no biggy. I actually ended up buying a McDougall ramen at the store :) and had a vegetarian sushi roll to go with it, for lunch at work. (Isn't it the coolest thing ever that Kroger has fresh-made OTC sushi available?) and I bought the Subway samwich to eat later, and ate it right before the viewing. Note: Do NOT carry a Subway samwich around on public transportation, for more than an hour in a plastic carry-out bag, before eating it. Because all the fillings will settle down to the bottom, and the bread will sog up, and the fillings will slide all over each other and fall out of the bread and THAT is not easy to eat in a moving car when he picks you up at the train station to take you to the mortuary

So we weren't hungry after the viewing, thank God. Because we were invited to join with the gang out to Chinese and we didn't go. And Sunday was a pretty good day with only the "minor" flub of having a wrap, using a tortilla that has fat in the ingredients...and dang, what was I thinking? Hydrogenated vegetable oils? Idjit. And Monday, brekkie on the way up to Idaho, which was off plan, and lunch after the burial, which was prepared using oil, though I think it was actually pretty healthy, for a Chinese diner. All in all, I ate two meals on those "red" days. And considering it was all surrounding the death of a loved one, and there was a lot of sadness, and some stress, and A LOT of strangers I had to speak to which is clean out of my comfort zone...I could have done much worse, believe me.

OMG I just recalculated my percentage. I've got 55 meals on here, and 13 of them are either yellow or red, leaving 42 out of 55 100% compliant meals...and that is ONLY 76%!!!!! Hell's bells. My percentage has actually gone DOWN from the last time I calculated it. Poop.

Just an FYI...Campbell's has a line of soups called Well, Yes! I bought the Black Bean and Quinoa after seeing on the label that it has less than 10% fat, and pronounceable ingredients. Had it for dinner last night and it was GOOD! I haven't bought Campbell's soups in more than a decade, seeing as they are basically chunky salt water, but in the interest of having a pantry with a LITTLE BIT of convenient food, I got me some. Not bad. Not bad at all.

yesterday I made a nice big batch of Bran New Vegan's Cauliflower Taco filling. That is going to be for dinner tonight, and all I need to get is tomatoes, because I have corn tortillas, lettuce, and salsa. Maybe I'll make a batch of not-cheese to go with that. Also, when I get home I'm going to make a big batch of Spanish rice. That just sounds really good, and it'll go with my tacos.

I MUST make some big batch food...minestrone was on the agenda, so I'll get that going tonight. And I really want to make Congee rice. I wonder if I can use brown rice that is already cooked...
