Bean dip

Postby dynodan62 » Mon Apr 19, 2021 2:28 pm

I am fond of Eden’s spicy organic refried black beans, and usually have it on toast for lunch. Since I need to give up bread for awhile (to lose weight), I would like to use the canned refried beans to make bean dip for raw veggies (it already contains nearly all the needed spices, etc.), but will need to thin it in the food processor first with water/lime juice/etc. (?). Just wondering if anyone could save me some experimentation and likely recommend the correct proportions?

Take care. Canned refried beans may not be a good substitute.

For ex., Old El Paso Traditional Refried Beans contain 2 types of lard. And lots of sodium - 440 mg. for a 1/2-cup serving.

Similarly - Rosarita Traditional Refried Beans also contain lard. And even more sodium - 580 mg for a 1/2 cup serving.

If these are the refried beans you are using, they don’t have added fat.

I like to add salsa to non-fat refried beans to use as a salad dressing. Beans are much higher calorie dense than salsa so the more salsa you add, the more you reduce the calorie density.

Salsa is another ingredient I hadn’t considered, though now another complication for calculating proportions to dilute beans and make dip.

Bottled salsas may not be a good choice, either. Many are loaded with sodium. Not good for your blood pressure.

For ex., 2 teaspoons of Tostitos Chunky Salsa has 250 mg of sodium.

He could easily add some no salt canned chopped tomatoes and salsa spices to his beans. Pomo has salt free tomatoes in an aseptic box that I enjoy using for salsa.
