Collagen

Postby catalina1 » Thu Oct 22, 2020 3:27 am

Was watching a special on collagen this morning, and this topic came up. One of the panelists said that in an all plant-based diet, you get zero collagen. He said that collagen is a very important nutrient, because it actually is the overwhelming component of our bones in particular, let alone our connective tissues. First off, is this true? Do we need to be supplementing collagen in our diet? Is there in fact no collagen in a plant base diet ?

Does the panel know that the body makes its own collagen? The way i understand it, the body makes it's own collagen and many other things it needs from little blocks of amino acids. It can make all the amino acids it needs on its own, as required, but for nine that have to come from food. If you eat collagen, first it is turned into the same little blocks of amino acids by digestion, so no trace of it really exists as collagen. The body then cooks up collagen as it requires from these amino acids.

Nonsense. Just for example, human breast milk contains zero collagen. And babies make bones just fine without collagen. The body makes this and many other proteins as needed from essential amino acids made exclusively by plants. Do cows need to eat collagen to make their bones too?

He is selling something. This is magical thinking. That we need to eat collagen to make bones. Eat protein to make muscle. Drink calcium to make bones. Eat iron to make blood. Eat a lion heart to be brave. This drives the supplement and food industries.

Thank u everyone that responded . I kinda had a suspicion that it was a money making scam . It seems vegans are an easy target these days , however .
