Why is a little added sugar allowed?

Postby wolfv » Fri Nov 29, 2019 7:17 am

Why do some WFPB doctors allow added sugar but do not allow for added oil?
e.g. small amount of brown sugar or maple syrup in dessert recipes, or a little sugar in packaged food.
  • Marry McDougall deserts add some maple syrup.
  • In book "UnDo It!" page 84, Dr. Ornish limits sugar to 25 grams for women, 38 grams for men (which is about 5% of calories).
  • In book "China Study Solution" page 165, Thomas Campbell allows less than 5% added sugars but also warns of sugar's addictive nature on page 43.
  • Dr. Klaper video says a little added sugar is OK.
Is there any evidence that sugar is less harmful than added oil?
I have no sweet tooth. However, I am tempted to eat 5% of calories in mayonnaise.

Thanks for linking this article, Dr. M. I haven't read it for a while. It clears up some confusion that had begun to cloud my mind. Thanks again.

Hi

A little sugar is allowed but it can also be tricky.
I can, occasionally put a little sugar on stuff and I am ok. I can't do it regularly because then I have major sugar cravings.
I see a lot of recipes with maple syrup as the sweetener. I can't do that at all because it gives me major sugar cravings immediatly.
It all depends on how your brain reacts to a little sugar.
