What's this?

Do you often find the check out person at the store asks, "What's this?" When faced with a turnip, artichoke, or whatever?
(Now ask yourself that question again in Andy Rooney's voice :)
I'm starting to find this comical ( and sad), but proud to make it a teachable moment.
I also can't help but play " Basket, basket, what's in your basket?" While standing in line. (This is my personal, private, time-killing game, of course).
I live in a low income area.
The amount of bacon, chips and soda is staggering.

I love Belgium endive. I had memorized the PLU years ago because cashiers never knew what to look up. Funny enough, I then became a cashier. Turnip and rutabagas always stumped me. I love seeing what people buy. I met quite a few WFPB people just buy seeing what they were purchasing.

I compare the sections of the supermarket itself.

The ice cream section is literally 3 times larger than the frozen veggie section.

There's more cheese than whole grains, most of the grain is variations of rice.

Candy, chips, and soda sections vs the produce section.

How much smaller could a supermarket be if it was starch based?

The cashiers at my two favorite stores have started asking me how to cook stuff. "What do you do with this?" So far, I've fielded questions about taro root, celeriac, daikon, and yuca/cassava.

Purple sweet potatoes!

Every time I buy them, the cashier or other shoppers ask me what they are and how to cook them.

I get to spread the gospel of tubers, so I don't mind :).

I can't control my obsession with other people's shopping carts. I never comment, but sometimes I would like to ask "are you serious"???
