New recall Romaine lettuce!

Postby spinner » Tue Nov 20, 2018 3:44 pm

Just this afternoon (Nov. 20, Tues.) the CDC has issued a recall for all forms of romaine lettuce.
https://www.cdc.gov/ecoli/2018/o157h7-11-18/index.html
This applies to the US and Canada. Whether whole head, chopped, or mixed with other greens, the CDC advises consumers to throw it away and wash your refrigerators where it was stored. I had a brand new 6 head bag from Sams Club and they said they would refund my money. I eat this nearly every day. Bummer, but better not to get ill.

I saw the warning after I came back from Costco with a pack of 6 heads. We were planning to have a salad buffet with the family after thanksgiving where everyone could add in their choice of ingredients to make a dinner salad. Now I'll have to look for iceberg lettuce or scrap the plans.

so, um, i dont eat raw veggies if i can help it.
i was looking at the safety regs for the workers harvesting
bagged salads etc.
and (for example) if they get a cut they are supposed to report it and quit working
or if they find deer poop in an area, the whole field of lettuce is condemned
etc.
i find those to be very very weak controls
how do we know if they dont do what they are supposed to?
(im just saying, as a migrant worker, lose a day of pay for a cut on my finger? where they do that at?)
so we get another recall...
but only coz people got sick this time
not because the other ("good") lettuce was proven free of contamination
just ppl didnt get sick.
so, since i took microbiology a long time ago
i cook my food
very very low bacterial counts in cooked food
we did that experiment.
fresh food (salads) goes bad very fast too ime

Spinner,

Thanks for the warning. I'll have to throw some lettuce out too.

Idgie,

I also have mostly stopped eating raw vegetables. Partly for sanitation reasons, and partly because my aging digestive tract seems to prefer them cooked now. Romaine lettuce is one of the last raw veggies I normally eat - it's that lovely crunch :) !

But, fortunately there are lots of other greens that I enjoy cooked. Even if they're not crunchy...

I think you meant to direct that to foodie. I still eat raw fruits and veggies. I know the risk and I do it anyway, but my immune system is pretty robust. I eat more cooked than raw, but I haven't yet cut out raw. If I were ill or a lot older, I might change my mind, but fresh, raw produce is a joy to me and I am willing to take a slight risk. I do wish I were a gardener, though, so I could just be sure of the environment my food was grown in.

I was happy to find pristine heads of blue ribbon Romaine back on the produce aisle today at Smart&Final. Here, let me test that for you! :D
