Mary's Mini Question

Postby Halcyon8 » Sat Sep 22, 2018 3:03 pm

Can anyone tell me if Mary's Mini includes a cup of beans per day, or is it simply the chosen repetitive starch plus veggies (and fruit if you use fruit, which I don't).

Thank you

From what I know, part of what makes it work is the boredom factor which heads off at the pass the tendency to over stuff and also maximizes the tastebud and neurological expectations reset potential...if that cumbersome sentence made sense at all. Pick one and then you don't have to think about it. Just eat that starch and veg whenever hungry. Stop when no longer hungry. Repeat for 10 days or so.

No, for 2 reasons.

1) Dr. McDougall limits all beans and legumes to a total of 1 cup daily because they're high in protein.

2) Beans are a starch, themselves.

The latest guidelines for doing a Mary's Mini were discussed by Dr. McDougall and Mary in this webinar they did with Gustavo Tolosa:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31oCHArKmhI

In it they discuss what is and isn't allowed during a Mini. The biggest change was that fruit is no longer allowed - just the one starch and vegetables.

The following was posted to an unofficial McDougall Facebook group a few years ago:

Mary's Mini is a fast weight loss diet based on Dr. John McDougall's Program http://www.drmcdougall.com. Mary McDougall is Dr. McDougall's wife and has several best selling cookbooks based on the McDougall Program.

Judy Lee, one of our members, posted this:
Mary’s Mini! I have just returned from an exciting McDougall intensive weekend and I cornered Mary McDougall to ask her to clarify some things about Mary's Mini. These are issues others have commented on in answer to questions that have come up. BTW, I hate to see double posts, but I am going to post his on the McDougall friends FB Page also.
This was her intent - doesn’t mean you have to do it this way. Here goes:
-You choose only one starch and eat it for 3 meals a day for 10 ten days. You CAN'T mix your starches or change your starches.
-You CAN prepare it differently for every meal. (You do not have to eat, or example, hash browns for breakfast every day and baked for dinner every day).
-You DO NOT have to choose only one vegetable. You can vary your yellow and green vegetables for every meal if you want.
-If you choose potatoes, it can be ONLY white potatoes OR only sweet potatoes. CAN”T eat both. (This one surprised me.)
-Mustard, ketchup, salsa, seasonings are OKAY.
-Non creamy salad dressing is OKAY.
-Plant milk is NOT okay.
-Gravies and Sauces are NOT okay
-Tofu is NOT okay.
-Fruit is NOT okay.
-You CAN’T eat beans if you have chosen another primary starch.

She emphasized that the idea is to make it taste kind of bland, or plain and simple tasting, so you won’t be tempted to overeat.

I still had a couple questions so I emailed Mary McDougall. Here are her answers:
What starch foods are allowed? Whole grains, roots or winter squash. No refined or processed flour products, such as bread or pastas, or couscous (which is a flour product. People usually choose foods they are familiar with which is why Brown rice and potatoes, or sweet potatoes usually are the starches people choose for their mini diet.

Is it for only 10 days, or can you stay on for longer?
It was initially based on 10 days, because that’s what we did it for ourselves and that’s how we wrote about it. Many people decide they like it so much they do it for more than 10 days and that is fine.
