Fish farming industry

Postby Risto » Mon Mar 27, 2017 4:42 am

Came across this documentary on Youtube about fish farming in Norway. I live on the shore of the Baltic myself and was under no illusions about the levels of pollution and the feed that's given to the farmed fish, but I was still shocked by some of this stuff. Especially the antioxidant preservative ethoxyquin that is used in fish feed and ends up in food, but has never been properly tested or approved. You'd think they couldn't pull that kind of thing off these days in the Nordic countries. Then there's naturally the fish equivalent of pink goo, i.e. ground-up fish heads etc. that end up in fish fingers and suchlike. The stuff looks lovely coming out of the grinder.

The Global Alliance Against Industrial Aquaculture is an international network dedicated to advancing environmentally and socially responsible aquaculture. GAAIA recognizes that salmon, shrimp, tuna and 'Frankenfish' farming jeopardizes sustainable and safe seafood production. By highlighting worst aquaculture practices, GAAIA will lead the fight against standards-setting and certification schemes for farmed salmon and shrimp farming in particular.

Way too gross to read, let alone eating any of that crap.

Thanks for that. I read the Guardian piece. I hadn't paid any attention to the price of salmon since I don't eat it, but that article made me google for stories in Finnish mainstream press about the price. The reasons for the price hike they cite were losses of harvest in Chile due to algal blooms, reportedly caused by El Nino, and losses in Norway - no cause given; slow growth of fish in Norway due to cold summers, and Norway cutting back production since the introduction of Russian sanctions (Russia was a major export market). Absolutely zero mention of parasites. It's almost as if the industry doesn't want to mention them to the media, or something.

Wild-caught salmon is often farmed and pumped up with pink coloring to look fresher. Sometimes it’s actually trout.

And then we've got yet another kinda insanity these days, does anyone still wanna "enjoy" that kinda omega-3 goodness?
